Thomson is atrocious at this. The starter gets his 100 pitches, even when it is obvious that they shouldn’t. We have 13 pitchers on the team, he relies on 4 of them too much.

Thomson strikes me as Charlie Manuel -Lite. CM was a great manager by record, but his in game decisions left a lot to be desired, if you go back and look we pointed out slot of obvious mistakes he would make. Players LOVED to play for him.

Thomson has some of that. He isn’t as bad of a game manager as CM, he has some really good ideas (using his best relievers against the meat of the order, etc), but in my opinion he is way to hard on starting pitchers and doesn’t get what he can out of his relievers.

We are 2nd in the majors in innings by starting pitchers (Atlanta) and have 2 of the top 4 individually (Wheeler and Sanchez).

Obviously succes also dictates those stats, but we are not 2nd in ERA (5th) and having 2 of the top 4, one of which is a guy who probably should be more limited than being 4th in the league (Sanchez) does not say quick hook to me.

Odd stat, our starters are almost the worst in the league at HR/FB (13.9%). Is that just Walker screwing up the stats? Not sure, very odd. (Nola had that problem, but not nearly as bad this year). Maybe our collective 5th starter has skewed that stat?

But also, we have the best record in the league so maybe his way works.

I get it, but crudely I feel like people complain about relievers coming in too soon or starters not being allowed to get a W just as much as they might about a starter staying in too long. I'm very much pro-reliever, don't get me wrong. It's not like when Bowa was the manager and a tired, crappy starter was always better than all but one or two relievers.

I also don't think Thomson make these decisions by himself.
