Bullpen again just horrid. Somehow, they have to get a couple reliable pitchers in the bullpen.

Great to win this first game. Good day for the offense and they overcome a 3 run deficit to win the game. Wheeler gets the win. Neris a save.

Still, that 4 spot by the Yankees in the bottom of the 7th takes a little of the shine off this one for me. It is a huge concern for the Phillies this season.

There's no way to avoid using pitchers who shouldn't even be in the majors right now - it just depends how and when you use them. Today was actually fine, those were auditions and both guys flunked. Today you clearly didn't want to use your best guys with a big lead; there have been other games where I think it was a mistake not to use them earlier innings of closer games.

I can't disagree with using some of the more questionable pitchers this game with the 8 run lead. Davis and Kelley clearly failed today. I expect Howard will be called up soon and with the reduction in rosters, two spots are being cut anyway. When they bring up Bohm, that will mean at least 4 from today's active roster will be gone.

I expect some of the more reliable relievers (assuming we have any) will be available for game two.

Davis seemed promising when he first came up. Was obviously a bit ahead of schedule then. Still got it done in AAA last year but not at all in the majors. I wouldn't have been surprised if he'd lost his 40-man spot but lefty relievers with options do have a lot of lives.

If this team loses a lot of games because of 5th and 6th inning relief pitching I reckon that means the offense and starters weren't good enough. But it's also frustrating that the pen is weak because they don't have a spare nickel, whether for someone like Liriano (not that he was guaranteed to be great) or a more reliable $3-4 million arm.

Grumbing in NY about Happ whom the Yankees outbid us to sign prior to last season. Perhaps we dodged a bullet there.

Well, we specifically didn't sign him because he wanted two years and is quite old! But he still would have been our third-best starter last year (just a hair behind Eflin WAR-wise).

We dodged a bullet on Hamels too.

As it turns out, in in a normal season I think his rotation was probably good enough. 5th starters are always shaky. Had Eflin flopped or Howard wasn't ready, they would have upgraded in July. Now, though, with so few games and less opportunity to make trades, it feels like those 5th starts will be magnified. Even for the Yankees.
