And Stocker on the radio made the comment that Kimbrel's pitch that was hit for a homer was actually a really good pitch. Sometimes you have to tip your hat to the opponent.

Dumbrowski deserves a metric ton of scorn for failing to fortify the bullpen at the Deadline. Rule 1 of general managing: fortify the bullpen at the deadline.

Kimbrel has been overused because Alvarado was hurt and Seranthony is shaky and Soto has never completely established himself as a consistent high-leverage guy (nor Hoffman. Heck, they gave Marte a few shots before he cratered again too).

But it's also the fault of the closer model. Thomson seemed to manage workloads a lot better when the roles were less rigid.

It's also the six-man rotation. Dombrowski did fortify the bullpen at the deadline, and that fortification is Lorenzen. Or Sanchez. And once the playoffs hit, Suarez maybe too. They did not need an extra arm in the pen for the stretch run. They're 17-9 in August!

Will you please knock it off calling names like dumbrowski... its immature. And its just a bad look for you considering the run this team is on.

Offense scores 8 and comes back to take a lead twice, so this loss is solidly on the pitching. The bullpen gives up 5 runs. As bad as that sounds, they almost won the game. Soto with 2 walks ended up giving them two runs. Not getting the first out in the ninth when the batter strikes out directly led to the loss. Sanchez gave up 5 runs but only 3 earned due to his error. Today was a game they just were not going to win.

Big picture, they take 2 of 3 from the visiting Angels after a sweep of the Cardinals. Winning series is the thing they need to continue to do. Phillies have won the last 3 series including one in a sweep.

Disagree. Kimbrel has been overused, sometimes when absolutely no need to use him. That's on the manager.

And the pitching coach for that matter. We're supposed to be in the age of usage charts (including warm-ups and off-days) and it's not like they don't track that stuff, but it seems like they throw it out when they don't like the other options.

I really do think it's the combination of Alvarado being out and the six-man rotation. The pen was pared to the bone for a while, which is also why Covey started getting some slightly bigger spots (and he didn't do badly in them either).
