Leiter shouldn’t have been out there in the first place, as he’s not a Major League pitcher (yet). I’ve no problem with the Phils giving playing time to younger players, but Kapler needs to put them in situations where they can be successful. Using Leiter in an initially close game in which the defense has been subpar was not a good idea.

That inning from Neris is good to see. I just hope he can pitch like that when the game is on the line. He has shown what he can do in the past and I think he has a place in the bullpen for next season.

Leiter lowers his ERA. I guess that is nice for him but hardly makes his outing any less of a total mess. Note, mess substituted for better descriptions of his pitching today, but in deference to the board rules, they will not be used here.

Leiter's role has always been to appear early in games where the Phillies trail. Score (and the vibe of the game) was a lot different than yesterday, especially with the doubleheader. They probably figured he'd go 2 innings, maybe give up a couple of more runs. Oops. But he wasn't in there to help set the stage for a comeback win.
