Altherr has a history of struggling for a long time - like, a full season - after he suffers an injury. He was awful post-injury last year too and his timing (and perhaps his health) did not return. But his future as a bench player may still be more certain than Williams' future as an everyday player.
I am enjoying watching Williams, Kingery, Alfaro and even Franco try to figure out - and allow the Phillies to figure out - whether they are part of the long-term future, and to what extent. Same with many of the relievers. The nice thing is, if it is July 31 and you decide to go all-in on a run this year by upgrading RF and either 3B or SS, you're only sidelining a few kids for 8 or 10 weeks, and/or a few people you might be done with. But right now just playing these guys is the thing that helps improve the team, even if it's not apparent in any given game or AB.
