I agree that the long standing 5 innings pitched for starters to get a win is no longer a sensible rule and should be changed.

I agree that the long standing 5 innings pitched for starters to get a win is no longer a sensible rule and should be changed.

I am not ready to get rid of it completely.I could easily be convinced it there were some conditions to it....such as a pitcher is ahead 1-0 after 3 or 4 innings and gets injured and has to leave the game. I am not sure I want to award a win to a pitcher who has given up 6 runs in 4 innings yet his team scored 8 so he is still ahead.

I can't explain the logic. I can explain why it happens - that's how they wrote the rules. Do you really expect that a committee of MLB is always going to be logical, any more than a committee of legislators (or any other committee)? Pure logic is, I suspect, more likely when you have a singular actor - when there are no competing interests/views to be reconciled.

And for what it's worth - it's not clear to me that there is an obvious, logical, "works all the time" approach to assigning a win (or for that matter, a loss) to a particular pitcher. It's a team game; sometimes, these things (pitcher wins/losses) are just arbitrary.
