Phillies win the series and that is always a good result.

Good chance today for a sweep but they manage to blow this game and lose by a run. That is going to happen to all teams over the long season, but of course, do this too often and you stay home in October.

Meanwhile, the Braves have come back from 4 down and are playing in extra innings. Not a good day for the Phillies today, but come back and take at least two from the D-Backs and we should be okay.

Braves take 6-5 lead in top of the tenth. Tyler Kinley got the first two batters out and then walked the next four. Marlins changing pitchers with bases loaded and two out.

it didn't seem to me like he muffed it, that it was a tough throw to handle (with a great effort by Franco) and to actually catch it he would have had to move.

It definitely needed to be a great play on both ends. Just a near miss by Hoskins. It was a legitimate hit.

No question that it would have been a great play on both ends if they got that out, but that infield single only started the downfall. The next batter walked on four pitches. Nola had to go back hard and retire VanMeter there. But fate continued to defeat the Phillies as the next hitter hit a dribbler toward short. A tough play but Segura didn't get a chance as Franco cut into him trying to cut the ball off. No play possible and the bases were loaded. Three chances to get the third out and all reached base. Yes, the bullpen didn't get it done and Votto followed with the hit to tie the game and then the Reds got the winning run in on another hit before that third out could be recorded. So that made 5 hitters not retired in a row, any one of whom would have kept the Reds from taking the lead. It happens, just hope not too often.

I am looking forward to the Arizona series and hoping the Phillies can take 2 of the 3.

o some extent managers have always managed to not get fired. If you do the obvious correct decision and fail, it's okay. Time was that decision was to leave the starter in, or go to your Proven Closer. Now it's to do what the numbers guys - and by extension, your boss the GM - say is best. You get bad outcomes and second-guessing either way.

Taking Nola out was the correct decision. He was at 104 pitches and that is plenty. He seems to be suffering a bit this season from his heavy use last year. It's just to big a risk to push him to 110 pitches. Bringing in Neris is a call I could easily support -- that certainly seemed to be a critical point in the game and reasonable to guess it would turn out to be THE critical point. I don't like the closer concept.

I completely agree. High pitch count, 4-pitch walk. And it was largely luck that Alvarez didn't get the next out. Certainly if Morgan had been available he'd have been the guy.

For any number of reasons Joey Votto never should have come to the plate with runners in scoring position, but he did, and he might have gotten that hit off anyone.

This loss was just as much on the offense as it was on the bullpen. The one guy that wasn’t mailing it in yesterday was Harper. I was really impressed with his passion, he really tries on the bases. Not many would have attempted to score from 2nd on the missed pop up. Not many would have been on second after Hernandez didn’t score on his single. Not many would have tug up and gone to third from second on the sac fly.

He probably should have stayed on second, then he wouldn't have tried to teal home and Hoskins would have finished his AB with a man in scoring position.

They weren’t holding him on 3rd, they had a two run lead. I have no issues playing aggressive in that circumstance and trying to steal the run. Hoskins hasn’t exactly been hitting great lately either.

The entertainment value certainly exceeded the lost opportunity. And yes it's true about Hoskins but still kind of ice cold to send that message, that you don't think the clean-up hitter can get you home there. Afterwards Harper admitted he should have known whether or not Hoskins had a take sign there (though at 0-2, how could he?).

If Odubel or Cesar or Seguar had done it that's all WIP would be talking about today (maybe they are anyway).

Also, ironically, the run Harper did score wasn't exactly by choice.

Passive or aggressive? Loss to Reds shows Phillies need consistency on the...
