Oh I'm sure there will be plenty more swings over the next few months. But I don't even mean the Mets per se (and they still have won the season series so far). But coming out the slump and Harper injury Phillies are now going to be 10-3, and it's not about bad teams this time (the Marlins aside, but 3 of 4 on the road against them is nothing to sneeze at). That the Mets have stumbled as well (including directly against us) is a bonus.

But he hasn't actually hit better than the starters. It is true he hits better with some regular playing time, but not better with actual regular playing time. He has started 9 games in the last 28 days and has a .221 OPS before tonight, #10. It was .638 with 11 starts in May. He rocked it in April.

There is a reason they were happy to give Wilson a shot at the LF playing time and now they are giving it to Kemp. Now, that doesn't mean Sosa isn't actually better than Kennedy, you could still let him play 3B with Bohm at 1B occasionally but hopefully that's moot soon. He's our starting 2B against LHP and it's unfortunate both our 3B and SS are also RHBs, but so it goes.

But he does now have a .722 OPS for the season. That, along with his better defense, may make him our best OF (or Marsh). That assumes his OF defense isn’t bad, as he seems to be one of those guys that can play 7 positions competently (not sure CF is a good idea).

I don’t know that a few starts, many of which are single game starts, are a good indicator. My point is that when a guy continues to play very well for this long and you have starters that are not very good, maybe it is time to make a move, no matter what the salaries of the players.

Certainly Sosa would be an improvement in RF. Probably in LF. Maybe at 3B. CF depends on his defense there, he isn’t that fast so. Probably not. 2B is hard to call because Stott is a good defender.

In the future where Turner plays somewhere else, I would think you have to think about giving Sosa some consideration.

Obviously we have prospects that change these thoughts if they work out.

No, Sosa would not be an improvement at any OF position. They gave that a try and quickly decided it was a bad idea. And I don't mean just because he had one game that went badly, I mean, the team sees him every day and he simply doesn't bring that much to playing in the OF, or as a hitter. Kemp is going to be a better LF than Sosa if he hits as he has been, and Casty is a better RF than Sosa when he hits. Sosa's WAR is only 0.1 now.

Also, his OPS is .646.

Our starters are good. They have their ups and downs, and we could use a legit RH platoon, bat but they are good. Marsh is great, Nick's bat is still important and Kepler has been showing signs of life.

They don't keep you out of the playoffs because your All-Star RF has a bad defensive WAR. It's a package deal, and major upgrades are not out there on our bench or on other rosters either.

Gotcha, that's probably the live stats including tonight, which, fair enough - the power of small samples, But if a .221 OPS in 11 starts is too small a sample than one game in which he raised his OPS by 60 points is too. We have his whole career already, it's the same every season (as far as how he has both hot streaks and get exposed with regular play).

Sosa has huge platoon splits.(921/514). Historically they are not that large, but he just is not better than any of our OF against right-handed pitching. Sure, he is fine in an emergency, but Castellanos is simply better than him even if he is not great.

Quoting WAR or overall OPS for platoon players is very misleading when they are often negative against their weaker platoon.

Yeah, you can play Sosa at 3B or SS against LHP to give either of those guys a day off but there's no reason to do that in RF where he's never played. Playing Rojas in CF or RF against RHP is still the best way to sit Nick down occasionally (because at least Rojas brings good defense regardless of the bat which isn't that great either way). And platoon 2B is Sosa's job these days, he's not buried on the bench.

Actually getting a good RHB OF who can platoon with Kepler - or an everyday LF or CF who would force Marsh or Kepler into RF part-time - is the only way to improve the situation. But the situation isn't really that bad, partly because the starters have all had spells of good play even if their collective performance for three months is underwhelmling, also because MLB outfielders just aren't that good. Casty is actually one of the 30 best offensive OFs (qualified) in MLB (by WRC+), and Fangraphs has him as a positive WAR player (0.2) incidentally (just below Kepler at 0.3). Marsh is at 0.5 WAR without being qualified; he's probably put up 1.5 WAR since early May to get back above 0.

Are there better OFs than all those guys? Of course. Are any of them available? Doesn't seem like it. Just a lot of guys who are about the same as Marsh or Kepler. If one of them happens to be a RHB (Taylor Ward, whose stats are almost exactly the same as Marsh's?), he's the guy, but that's still someone who only plays 25% of time.
