I think the changeup is the key for starters these days, everyone can hit a 95 MPH FB now, but if you have a good changeup, that FB looks more like 100+ because your timing gets all screwed up. And it allows RH pitchers to handle LH hitters, bust a FB inside and a change fading just outside and hitters lose it.
The splitter is just a changeup with a grip that causes it to dive instead of fade like a screwball or a good two seam FB.
