Welcome to the new baseball when 17 Ks in a 9 inning game is no longer remarkable. If we did not monitor pitch counts the single game pitcher K record would certainly go.

I guess Neris had a 0.0 WHIP tonight

Neris looked very good tonight and did a great job getting the final two outs. However, Hunter also faced two and retired two, so I don't know that I would have made the change with one out in the ninth. It certainly worked great, but now both Hunter and Neris pitched tonight. It's looking like Kapler is using Hunter as a LOOGY or at least he didn't want Neris starting off the inning facing a lefty hitter.

Nola with another #1 quality start and earns his 5th win of the season. The bullpen gives up a run on the home run but was lights out in the ninth with the 1-2-3, K-K-K inning. The bullpen had 5 Ks in six outs.

Altherr, Santana, and Alfaro lead the way with home runs and Herrera had two hits to produce enough runs to win behind the solid pitching tonight.

Super start to the home stand. Record goes to 20-15.

The last replay on the play at first sure looked too close to overturn the call IMO. As I saw it, the foot hit the bag just as the ball was going into the glove. That is safe. Maybe they had more views of the play than I saw on MLBTV.

That's what they said about Hunter when they signed him, that he could get lefthanders out. And now they don't have Morgan. I don't think they will ever not play the match-ups and the numbers late in close games; the fact that they didn't just reflexively go to Neris to start the 9th is fine in my book, though I also imagine Hunter could have just gotten the last two outs. Maybe not as efficiently though.

Santana probably the story of the night eh?

I think Kapler wanted to give Neris a confidence boost so he let him in to get the last two outs while the bases were empty. He was managing for more than just this one game. If this was a game seven I think he would have kept Hunter in until he gave up a base runner.

I was at the game last night. I really thought Nola didn't have his best stuff early on. He had a high pitch count by the fourth inning and I had my doubts that he would even make it to the sixth.. But, he really picked up steam, got better as the game went on and was much more efficient with his pitch count from the fifth on.
