As you said, there weren't any good options. Maybe it was Walker's day to throw, but I don't blame Thomson for not wanting to push him in this kind of game. I don't think Thomson even wanted to let Alvarado have another inning, but other than having Banks pitch for the third day in a row, what else could he do? I suppose he could have brought Hernandez in to start the 10th, but if it went to the 11th, then what?

Stretching Nola for an extra inning yesterday makes more sense given the uncertainty about how far ranger could go today.

Phillies come up short but kudos for coming back from 6 down and forcing extra innings. Nine runs should win most games, but not today. Bullpen did have four consecutive scoreless innings but just couldn't get a fifth. Phillies do win the series, but once again, the sweep eludes them. Shake it off and come back to win the next series.

Other than Alvarado's second inning, which no one wanted but circumstances left no alternatives for, the bullpen was great once again.

I'm not too worried about Ranger...yet.

I think Ranger will be fine but we will see. Yes, the bull pen had some strong innings, but Rob ran out of arms and almost had to bring Alvarado back in the tenth. My problem with the way they use the bullpen is that IMO they have too many one inning only relievers. Today, Strahm pitched a 1-2-3 inning throwing 7 pitches and Ross pitched a 1-2-3 inning only throwing ten pitches. Both have pitched multiple innings in the past. I would have used both for a second inning today. I would only have 2 or 3 in the pen who always pitch only one inning and would use the rest for a second inning much more often than they do. Of course, they know more about this than I do, but they seem to be burning out the pen with so many pitching so often.

It has been an issue with Thomson every season.

He will not use guys for more than 1 inning unless he absolutely has to and it has haunted us numerous times.

I get the longer run value of that approach in maintainjng a routine and potential health for relievers, but a pen still needs to have guys who can go more than 1 inning and a manager who, if the guy throws 7 pitches, will give another inning.

But how much say does Thomson really get? Yeah the buck stops with him and he has to make in the moment calls but there is no game where it is not determined in advance who is available and when and for how long, and that comes from the front office and pitching coaches first. It is more the matchups and preparation than routine or workload, and we only notice when it goes wrong (and/or they only go off script if it goes wrong).

Actually, Ross has pitched more than one inning in half of his outings. He pitched one inning last night but threw 22 pitches. I agree with Thom's decision to limit him to a single inning. It would have made more sense to have Strahm go another inning, especially with the off day tomorrow..

I think they want Ross to be the multi inning guy but until Romano and Kerkering can be trusted he has to be used more and differently.

Play of the game? Radio kept talking about how this has to be a DP...of course it wasn't any it turned into a run which ultimately ended in a tie game after 9 instead of a Phillies walk off win. Hard to tell how things would have turned out had this play been made though.

I am surprised they brought Alvarado back for another inning. He didn't have a clean 9th (although if a DP would have been handled he could have only faced 3 batters. I would rather push the issue on the last man in the bullpen than require my closer to throw another game with 30 pitches.

The last man was Walker though, and he just pitched 5 2/3 on Thursday. Everyone else pitched except Banks who wasn't available. Ruiz on IL. And tomorrow an off day (though good chance Jose's not available Tuesday). They kind of put themselves in a bit of a spot by not keeping Walker and Ranger on the same rotation turn, compounded by making the move a day early due to Nola's sore neck. Had they just waited to start Ranger on Walker's next day they could have called up another reliever for Ruiz in the meantime (or just pitched Ruiz, if his injury is, well, perhaps not that serious).

I'm the last guy to defend Turner, but with Carroll running it was near impossible to turn the DP. Ball was hit ok and right at Stott but not hard enough to give them a real shot.

Of course, Turner botched the turn, so if it had been a normal runner, yes, he would have been responsible for yet another run with his defense and it would have been a killer.

Kruk pointed out on TV that a savvy SS probably could have taken a different route and got an interference because Pendamo forgot to slide. But the standard for Turner should be mediocre and on this play he met the standard. Here's hoping he can improve enough to be consistently mediocre, he hasn't been so far this year.
