No save for Neris, lead too big, not enough runners on, and outing too short.

I got no problem with Neris coming in. That's supposed to be the whole point of the team's approach. No set closer, play match-ups. And I presume he'd warmed up. Not sure it would have mattered if Davis had hit a home run off of Ramos, Ramos still would have gotten the save (or been relieved at that point) but my guess is they already knew they were going to make that switch at the start of the inning, it wasn't situational.

Credit to Neris for getting the out. Credit Ramos for getting the two outs in the ninth. Together, they gave the Phillies an great performance in the ninth. Cannot say enough about the start from Pivetta. He deserves to get the win. He is now 3-2 and has his ERA down to 3,72, a decent level for a number three starter. Another well pitched game holding the O's to the first inning solo home run and only 3 other hits. Only walked two and struck out 13.

I'm not sure on the save rule. I see the box score does not give Neris a save. It is a way overvalued stat anyway.

Hernandez runs his OPS to .810 with the triple and home run today. Herrera on base streak runs to 42.

Save rule is finishing somebody else's win (obviously) with:

3 or more innings

or pitching at least a full inning up 1, 2, or 3 runs

or pitching with tying run on deck and any number of outs to go.

A reliever entering the game in the ninth is so ultra-rare these days I'd almost forgotten that you have to pitch a full inning otherwise! I wonder how common saves in the third situation were back in the days of Fingers, Gossage, etc.

Thanks EF. Ramos would have gotten a save if he had stayed in and finished the inning, holding the lead.

I guess this bullpen usage is going to be the way things go under Kapler, but I hate seeing a pitcher get to Ks and then get taken out with no runners and a 3 run lead. Seems to me that Ramos deserved at least one more batter to face to try for the save.

Regardless, it is a win and the Phillies go to 24-16 on the season. Eight games over .500 and 7-2 in the last nine games. Only the two blown saves by Neris keep them from a 9 game winning streak. They are playing well. Huge four game series coming up in St. Louis.

I might be upset if I were Ramos, a 3 run lead with nobody on and not being allowed to get the save against a guy hitting .173 and his run is meaningless?

I understand the reasons Kapler wants to give Neris some non pressure situations to get his confidence back.

If Kapler wants to establish the 9th as just another inning, then not worrying about the save for Ramos is one way to do it. And maybe it will be less tense pitching the 9th for whomever's pitching if he thinks it's not all up to him?

It is weird that somebody gets a hold for beginning the 9th in a save situation and one does not get a save for entering later. That is the letter of the rule. Is it a save situation when the person enters the game? And did their performance finish the game (required of a save) or preserve the save situation (required of a hold).

Ramos enters the game in a save situation and his performance (i.e. not giving up the lead) does not detract from the save situation. Neris enters the game not in a save situation so his performance does not matter. If only Ramos had put a runner on and then left the game, then Neris would have received a save.
