Since it's a rain delay: Funny to listen to (and read) the Mets coverage which was entirely about Conforto's strengths rather than Hector's trouble. Understandably.

Everything leading up to the homer by Conforto — who began his weekend with a .191 average and .303 slugging percentage and found himself batting seventh for a second game in a row — instilled confidence in Callaway. Conforto singled in the second, a grounder hit hard enough to sneak up the middle. In the fourth, his sharp line drive — 107.7 mph off the bat — was caught in left-centerfield.

“Your one goal is to hit the ball hard somewhere,” said Conforto, who walked in the seventh after falling behind 0-and-2 against Jake Arrieta.

That was enough to inspire Callaway to say to first-base coach Ruben Amaro Jr. at the start of the ninth inning, “We need to get somebody on because Conforto is going to hit a homer.”

I'd like to bring back the single admission double header. Growing up in the Harrisburg area, I didn't get to many games in person. I was by the radio most games and TV on weekends. I'm pretty sure that I didn't go to a game in Philadelphia that was not a single admission double header during the first 24 years I was a fan. We always went for a double header. Of course, we usually went on a Sunday and on several occasions, we did the Phillies Excursion train package.

Reading about proposals to shorten the season, I would suggest cutting from 162 games to 154 games (the old season length). I would also require each team to schedule two single admission double headers. This would reduce home games for each team from 81 to 77 but home dates from 81 to 75. Each team would lose 6 home dates. Each team would play 154 games over the season, scheduled on 150 dates. This is a reduction from the 162 dates now being scheduled. They could return the start of the season until the second week of April and still finish by October, giving the players suitable off days during the season. Of course, owners might not want to lose the gates given up, but it might be good for the sport.

Maybe by August, the Phillies will have broken out of the NL East jinx or perhaps, by then, they will be out of contention. Regardless, I hope they can come back tomorrow and nail down a win against the hated Mets.

Will Eflin start tomorrow or will they jump to Nola? Not sure what I would do, but I think I would stick with the rotation and give everyone extra rest.

Agreed, though of course a doubleheader today is a seven-hour commitment, back then it was probably five-and-a-half.

My recollection is the team was much more likely to do double-admission make-up games when they were winning and selling more tickets, though that's also somewhat out of necessity. Right now attendance is not so high that they can't accomodate all the make-up ticketholders who will actually want to go (and who don't already have a ticket for that game).

I had tickets to tonight's game, made my way down there, had a beer and then heard it was postponed. Truth is, they probably could have gotten the game in though it would have started around 9:00. The rain let up by then.

Maybe just as well. Fan ratio was 2-1 Mets. Disgraceful.

I know Mets fans have always travelled, just like Phillies phans used to take over DC, and that worm will turn again. But at this point I bet there's also tens - if not more than a hundred - of thousands of New York (and North Jersey) natives living in the Philly metro area.

Of course the Mets fans who did travel also had to show up at the game, walk-up local fans could see the weather and bail. I saw people complaining that they didn't just call the game in advance, because they did what you did (and put money in team's concessions pocket).

Anyone who lives in Central or northern NJ feels like it can take about as long to get to CBP as it does to cross the Hudson and get through a borough or two to get to Queens, so it's easy to "travel well" when you don't have far to travel.

I live in Lambertville, which is Central NJ, and if feels like it takes 2 to 3 times longer to get to Citi Field than it go to CBP. I'm hoping they get today's game off as I'm meeting my daughter for the game.

Just for the record - it doesn't just "feel like" it takes more effort for somebody from parts of central NJ to get to Citi Field than to just go to CBP. It does.

Kingston, NJ (north of Princeton) - CBP: 55 minutes; Citi Field: 1 hr, 15 minutes.
Lambertville, NJ - CBP: 48 minutes; Citi Field: 1 hr, 36 minutes.
Allentown, NJ - CBP: 47 minutes; Citi Field: 1 hr, 18 minutes
Freehold, NJ - CBP: 1 hr, 5 minutes; Citi Field: 1 hr, 13 minutes.

Note that Freehold is in northern Monmouth county, most of the way to Asbury Park. Not remotely Phillies territory, very much in the New York orbit - but it's closer, timewise, to CBP than to Citi Field

Central Jersey. Sandy Hook. The regular ferry is $46 round-trip to Manhattan. The Mets deals were pretty similiar (or you could pay $70 and get a game ticket included). Doesn't seem to be offered anymore.

Thank, z. Yeah, the regular run to Manhattan is $46, takes an hour. They don't appear to be offering runs to Citi Field (or Yankee) any more - evidently not enough interest.

So a resident of central Jersey would need to drive to Atlantic Highlands (I-195 east, then up the coast to the Highlands if coming from Mercer, Burlington, etc. Down Route 9 from Middlesex. Pick your poison from Hunterdon!), then take an hour-plus ferry ride to Queens (beyond Manhattan). And from most places in central Jersey, CBP is less than an hour, total.

The ferry would reduce the stress of getting to Citi, but not the time involved.

I would never drive to Queens from anywhere, though from what I hear these days about the NY subway (which I have taken recently, but SSS), Penn Station to Citi Field probably takes as long as Trenton to CBP.
