I think they were pretty clear that they didn't like the offers for Hernandez, not this year or last year. I think we also knew what they wanted for him (pitching). His value isn't declining either, Rupp's obviously was going to (and Joseph had none).
If things go well this season they can trade him for a starter or reliever in July but then again if things are going well he'll probably be one of the reasons.
I think prior to spring training they had absolutely no reason to think Kingery should start the season as the starting 2B. Yeah, he could have, but his AAA numbers combined with the service time meant it wasn't necessarily the right move. Things changed fast but the trade market was lost by then (and you lose leverage when everyone knows you're trying to clear a block).
