I'm not at all obsessed with sending Rojas to the minors, but the media and most of the fan base is (current focus: not so much his lack of hits as the fact that none of his outs have left the IF either). He becomes an easy scapegoat if more of the 1-8 hitters don't start to come around, and his presence on the roster is also premised on those hitters producing. Right now he's a negative WAR, sub-.100 hitter which obviously doesn't mean anything yet but is he going to get one month? Six weeks? Two months?
The Phillies' actions say it all. They committed to Rojas in CF the minute they signed Merrifield, who they overpaid because he agreed to accept a part-time role, but whom they also still believe is actually good. Then they second-guessed themselves and decided they couldn't risk losing Pache on waivers. But if Rojas can't stay in the bigs they will need to replace him in the short-term and neither Pache nor Merrifield look like everyday LFs (nor can they platoon). And even if Rojas does stick around, they'll need to replace Pache with a LHB, especially if Merrifield isn't hitting (doesn't help to not have a platoon split if you're just bad).
Still got several months for it to play out, both in terms of how these guys perform and when the likes of Clemens or David Dahl get a look-see. Ideally Rojas settles in and is 2-3 WAR player even while hitting .200 and they are above .500 and just looking for bench upgrades. It's still hard to believe they couldn't land a Grichuk or Pham or Rosario (especially since their actions also speak louder than words when it comes to playing Marsh every day).
They Phillies did re-examine how they run ST! In recent years they've also blamed COVID, the labor dispute and the WBC. But they have been bad early in the season for 25 of the last 30 years!
