Walker has an ugly ERA, but he didn’t have a terrible game. One too many innings would have made it look better, still not great statistically, but we all know he is working into shape.

Schwarber had 2 singles. Almost more shocking than Stott having 2 HR

While the details are different seems like that is pretty much how Walker went 15-6 last year. He's never that great but he gets run support and eats innings.

He can't be sent down, clearly the subtext of the Phillies even shortening his rehab stint when it seemed obvious they would be best served extending it to the max is that, essentially, once the player says he is healthy and feels fine, the team is obligated to return him to the major league roster (and the luxury of major league life). They could have put him in the bullpen but they couldn't keep him in AAA. Especially after what just happened with the Mets.

Another win and a great series in San Diego.

Walker wins again as he often did last season. For what ever reason, the Phillies win at a better pace in his games than in those of the other starters. I was surprised that he started the 7th inning. Seemed to me that pitching six and leaving with a 4 run lead would have been a great first outing. Sure, his pitch count was very good but he clearly was not dominating the Padres. Regardless, the Phillies bullpen came on and did the job today.

Good offense again with three home runs (all with a runner on base) and some doubles. Great to see Stott get the 2 home runs and maybe even greater to see Castellanos walk three times.

Well, not really.

I am pleased and impressed by how strong they came out to start a West Coast road trip, especially after struggling a bit in Cincinnati. I suppose Padres have been a good match-up for them compared to the other NL West teams.

He was fine. Never should have pitched the 7th inning.

Clearly. But in the third inning he was described as a batting practice pitcher who is not ready to pitch in the majors by PC (hey, at least it wasn't the first inning which was always his issue last year).

He was throwing BP with his FB. Padres hit 7 100 MPH outs off him, and rarely swung and missed. They scored 8 runs for him, and he helped himself out with that behind-the-back DP catch. To be fair, he looked fine in the later innings against the bottom of the Padres' order. Let's hope he keeps getting better. 88-91 on the FB won't do it.

If those were his averages he must have been hitting 93 and 94 eventually.

Taijuan Walker wobbles in the seventh, but Phillies finish off a sweep of the...

on Sunday, he hit 92 mph in the first inning and continued to hit it throughout the game. He averaged 91.6 mph on his sinker and 91.1 mph on his four-seam fastball.

I don't really know what the Phillies are doing. Thomson also says he left Walker in to save the bullpen, which I guess he meant in terms of the fact that they are going with a de facto six-man rotation on this trip. But with the extra rest that buys Nola and Wheeler I doubt that's going to be a problem over the next five days. Sounds like a piggyback is still going to be the answer because Thomson said they aren't sticking to a six-man but also declined to say that Turnbull was going to the bullpen.

Those speeds aren't consistent with the telecast numbers, so maybe the telecast had it wrong. The averages seem high if those first inning numbers are his maxes, which they seem to be.

Fangraphs (which is supposedly consistent from park to park) has his FB at 91.8 mph (about 1 mph slower than last season's average) and his sinker at 86.5 mph, and pitch info has the FB slightly higher, at 92.0, and a really high value for the sinker, 91.7. Those numbers are each 1 mph below his average values for 2023.

After one game, his FIP is almost 7.00, and his xERA is almost 12. Despite the win, it wasn't a good outing, which I think most fans sensed just watching.

I wonder if the Phils aren't trying to trade his contract...he seems unhappy in Philly (ever since he was skipped for the playoffs), maybe they want to help him find a change of scenery.

Like I said I feel like he wasn't very good in the same way he wasn't very good last year, which is to say he's actually pretty good, especially for a fifth starter (as a #3 last year with a free agent salary, less so). But the inflated ERA isn't really his fault (it's Thomson's for not pulling him sooner).

I don't think he's very tradeable, though if he stays above water for a couple of months maybe he could be moved at the deadline. But don't know that the Phillies can actually afford to trade him. Even if Turnbull can pitch 120 innings (which his contract actually incentives), with no Walker they would still be one regression or injury away from needing Kolby Allard or Mick Abel.

After this season they could probably trade him and pick up half his salary but they might also have to try and do that with the RF. And since Turnbull is a free agent and Suarez is just a year away and Abel is hardly a sure thing next year (nor is Painter) still a good chance the guy finishes his contract unless he is truly awful (in which case he still finishes it, just not on the roster).

It really was not much different than his post-July data from last season, though of course we see that as him running out of gas a bit at that stage. I guess the big question for him is whether he can settle in a bit higher at 93 and then get enough movement to consistently get soft contact (i.e. fewer home runs). He is probably not going to hit 95 consistently again and miss bats like he used to. But his command and game management are better than when he was young. Can he be an average back end starter with what he has today?
