well yeah. I actually listened to some of the Phillies on the radio because i couldn't even find the Sixers. had I been home I guess I would have done Phillies on a laptop.

The best thing about this game is it gave Suarez a low pressure "exhibition" game to work out his kinks, velocity trending up and this should help him get into regular season form.

Looks like Norwood is another live arm they've found in the coal pile. 96 MPH, splitter, slider. Yikes!

Falter is also getting into regular season shape, touched 92.

It's just so hard to read anything into April games, other than they seemed to have "fixed" Bohm, while he may never be a 30 HR hitter, get enough doubles and you can still put up a .200 ISO while hitting .400.

Not sure where Segura is in his recovery, but they really need to put Bohm in the lineup most days. Stott is struggling, so Camargo can play some 2B if they need it, but Bohm back at 3B really makes sense for this lineup. And being away is the best time to reintroduce him to 3B away from the home fans.

Of course you could also argue that if it ain't broke... (i.e., not playing 3B lets him focus on hitting). But, there's just not enough ABs for him that way. This may all just end with Stott going to AAA. But then you know they're going to want to find a 40-man spot for Torreyes, if Camargo really can't play SS at all.

With Bohm producing, is return to 3B next?

I think Stott is finding out what Kingery did. Spring training is a lot of Minor league pitching with an occasional inning of Majors pitching. it's a little different trying to hit in the Show. he needs some more time with AAA pitching I think. Thank goodness Klentak did not offer Stott a 6 year deal after a great spring.

So how come Klentak, MacPhail, Kapler, Girardi, Dombrowski and Fuld all don't know that too?

Sending Stott down now would make keeping him on the ML roster seem like a very stupid move. By putting him on the 40 man they moved his FA year up a year, if he can't play in the majors that will be a pretty big mistake.

They only moved up his free agency a year if they don't send him down. They can send him down for about 3 weeks and get that year back if they have to.

We should not overreact to one tough game at the plate. He is probably pressing which is natural. His swing does look a bit long to me (too much launch angle?) but it has also worked for him in the past against good competition so I don't think there are larger problems handling the strike zone like Kingery had.

Bottom line though is that Bohm should play. Camargo has had a few nice games but we know enough about him to know that the best Phillies long term lineup has him on the bench. Bohm's defense was bad last year, but only unacceptable if he is also bad offensively. There is no reason to think that Bohm cannot get back to his rookie offense which built off solid minor league performances. The Phillies are a better team with that player in the lineup and they should be able to live with the defense if they just trusted him more.

It's also April after a truncated spring training. So we're still effectively in spring training except against better competition - that is, players are still making adjustments and getting comfortable, whether Stott at the plate or Bohm in the field.

Of all sports, baseball requires the most patience, the difference between a .220 BA and .300 BA is 4 hits over the first 12 games or so. Which could just be "noise." JT just K'd 4 times, time to send him down?

Long I'm sure is monitoring the young hitters, watching if it's just a matter of subtle adjustments or if they're over their head and will need some tweaking and time in AAA.

The issue is simply the overall roster construction. The idea that there are enough ABs for all these guys was always a myth. Just call Stott the SS and Bohm the 3B and Camargo the utility IF and you're done, but there's still one other guy. Or call Stott the 3B and Bohm the primary DH... but there's still one other guy.

I have always believed that Utley and Howard had great ML starts to their carriers because they had what many here considered too much AAA time. It also hurts Stott and Bohm not playing regularly and not playing one fixed position. At least, that is my opinion.

Well, that's an interesting argument, but the game has also really changed since then in terms of how teams understand the value and perfomance of young players. Utley and Howard both not playing a full season until they were 26 cost the Phillies two years of peak athleticism and production. The really good young players don't need much time in AAA. Whether Bohm or Stott are actually at that level, I don't know. It's pretty much chicken/egg since it's the Phillies.

But the one thing you do not need to do with young players is sit them for long periods. With Stott I imagine it was a day of rest after 5 Ks, but Camargo is very quickly becoming Ronald Torreyes in that he is a known quantity mediocre player taking playing time away from kids who absolutely have to play if they are going to be in the majors.

DIdi is problem number two to deal with (though he has looked a bit better in the field), but Camargo is the first problem. If Bohm and Stott are not starting in 50% of the games they should be in AAA. They are better players than Camargo. Stott is probably better than Didi at this point. And the Phillies are a better team if they unlock that 850 OPS bat that we know is inside Bohm.

Time for the manager to be a better manager.

I doubt that Girardi is taking these decisions on his own. These are group FO ones.

And it's time for me to be a better baseball player but that's not gonna happen either.

I do think Girardi gets to make these calls, though the front office gave him these players and kind of forced his hand - and also discussed it with him. But Dombrowski basically said, it's up to Joe to figure out how to get these guys their playing time. At the same time, sure - if this was the Dodgers or Giants front office the GM would just tell him to quit playing Camargo and Didi so much. Or wouldn't have necessarily given him those options (or four DHs) to begin with.

Clearly Bohm and Stott need to play more. I think a month or two in AAA would help Stott. Bohm needs to improve in the field but I’m not sure he ever will. Regardless, I think both would be helped by consistent play at a fixed position.
