Did anyone actually think that? I mean, I know some of the projections and predictions varied wildly but I figured they were still at least five games apart - which would still have been a big leap, granted.
I also don't think the front office was truly building a team to win the East. For that they would have indeed gone after another pitcher (Yamamoto was a whole different play), high-end reliever or OF.
But they obviously didn't want to fall five games out in three weeks either. And hopefully after tomorrow it will still only be one.
