The first winning season in a decade, but not the 84 wins i would have viewed as a significant improvement and pretty much a belly-flop to end the season. They were in it almost until the end, but failed in crunch time. The Braves proved to be the better team. For some reason, Marlins still often have our number.

Well, you can't say this year wasn't an improvement on last year - 2nd place, fewer games back, higher winning percentage - but the difference in any season between 2018 and 2021 is minimal. And it's downright shocking that a second year of Girardi, an improved bullpen and an MVP season from Harper plus a near-Cy season from Wheeler only wound up being worth a little bit compared to all the other holes and drop-offs.

Yes, a winning season and the best record in ten years, but they still stumbled at the end. Again.

They fail to show that they are winners. Losing 5 of the 6 on the closing road trip is another end of the season flop. This year, there were periods of great hope and excitement as they played well only to be followed by a string of games where they were flat out bad.

They have much work to do this off season to put a team on the field in 2022 that is capable of and actually does win 90+ games.

Yeah, significantly better than last year, but barely better than 2019. 2020 seemed an awful outlier. Good to finally have a winning record, but I can't call this season a significant step forward. In terms of home-grown talent, on a team that has about maxed out both spending and success on FA, this year was arguably a big step down on home-grown and bargain acquisitions. As i said on another thread, this is the high-water mark on how far FA can carry the Phillies. The abysmal lack of home-grown contributors, coupled with a not-great identification and signing of cheap professional talent is discouraging.
I say arguably a big step down in home-grown talent, because I expected much more from Bohm, Kingery, and Nola. The odds of getting as much from Harper, Wheeler, and Realmuto in 2022 as we did this year seem slim. I'm not looking forward to another year of SS Didi.

That just can't happen, unless he can somehow become a 110 OPS+ player at the plate again. Super-sub, bench, lopsided trade, anything! Heck it might be better to flip him with Segura again, worst possible case (but then you'd make Segura worse. I'd still consider selling high on him though).

All of it with Didi might be a test of Joe's objectivity and influence too.

Meanwhile JP Crawford would have been 2nd on the Phillies in WAR (just ahead of Segura ironically).

And yeah, Dombrowski and whoever else will have to do a lot better with the free agents. And they desperately still need one of these OFs to hit at least part-time.I hope Kingery is able to figure it out too though he's already past the point of being cheap homegrown talent (as is Rhys but under much better circumstances).

It is a big mystery to me what happened between the Phillies and Crawford. In the 2017-18 offseason, the Phillies traded Galvis to open the job up for Crawford and Crawford was the 2018 Opening Day shortstop and he played in 21 of of their first 26 games, starting 20 of them. He ended up on the DL by the end of the month and, for whatever reason, that was the end of him being their shortstop of the future. He never got a chance again the rest of the season--despite the Phillies' defensive woes that season--and after that season and prior the trade, the Phillies gave no indication that they saw him fitting into their plans for the future. What on earth happened during that month of April 2018? Did they for whatever reason see him as having maturity, coachability or work ethic issues? Did he get on Kapler's bad side (they were still all-in on Kapler at that point)? Was it a matter of him insisting that he try to be what he was instead of something else the Phillies crack-coaching staff wanted to try to make him? Seriously, what happened?
