The odds say same result as 2009, but very different to me. I think the 2009 team was the stronger team and they didn't make it. This team has outperformed expectations in every series. Watching them, they have more of the sense of hunger, spirit, determination, and fortune at their back as the 2008 team.

I think the difference between 2009 and 1993 is that in 2009, we were the current champions, having won the WS in 2008. We almost expected to win again in 2009. The team probably was improved over the 2008 team. Not winning was a let down. In 1993, we were the surprise team. I think the Phillies were a last place team in 1992. Just getting to the WS was a huge surprise to the baseball world. Yes, it was crushing to not win in 1993, but after the dust settled, it was still a very memorable season.

Now I certainly am not saying that just getting to the WS is good enough this year, but we do have to admit, most of us did not expect to see the Phillies in the World Series in 2022. Dare we hope that this miracle season can continue on to a world championship? You never know, it just might.

But even if the Astros do go on to win this series, I do not anticipate the let down and disappointment of losing to the Yankees in 2009. 2022 is going to be remembered as a very memorable and loved season by most Phillies phans.

A counterpoint is that you can look back at the 1993 and 2009 World Serieses and, in the case of 1993, really legitmately say "Dang, we should have won that Series." That eighth inning in Game 4 when we coughed up a 14-9 lead with four of the fateful runs coming with two out. Joe Carter hitting the homerun (which wasn't really off a bad pitch, Carter just had a good golf swing). Until the day I die, I will say that the 8th inning of Game 4 of that series was the worst moment of that World Series, not Carter's home run. When you think about it, the 1993 Phillies fell three outs short of a World Championship (if only that third out in the 8th inning of game 4 came a batter sooner and if only Carter hit into a doubleplay). Hence, in my book at least, the 1993 World Series gave a sour ending to what had been a true joyride of a season and the fact that the Phillies would not have a winning season until eight years later made that sourness linger and intensify. The 2009 World Series didn't really give me any moments or innings that I wanted back, except for maybe the 9th inning of Game 4 although you have give credit for Damon fouling off a couple hundred pitches.

Getting back to 2009, going to baseball-reference and Wikipedia and seeing how many teams went back the WS the year after winning it...the success rate for teams not named the Yankees trying to pull off the WS repeat is mediocre at best. Eighteen teams not named the Yankees have gone back to the World Series the year after winning it and only nine of them have won that second consecutive title. And only one in the last forty-six years (the '93 Blue Jays). The Yankees, however, are 12-4 in repeat attempts. I guess the moral of the story is that unless you're the Yankees, the climb back to the mountaintop is just as hard as the first climb up to it.

WIth the caveat that this WS has yet to be played, this feels like a little bit of both 1993 and 2009. The fight, spirit, camaradrie and the hunger of these guys and the sense of playing with house money reminds me of 1993 while facing a clearly-superior-on-paper opponent reminds me of 2009.

I think I'm reminded more of 1983. That team had some holes but unexpectedly made it to the World Series. Of course the 2022 Phillies don't have so many geezers, but the 1983 had a superstar, a couple of aces, and a couple of youngsters with potential (Samuel and Hayes). I hope 2022 ends better than 1983.
