And the Eagles have activated Covey from the practice squad for the third and final week. If they want to do it next week, they will need to sign him to the active roster, there is a roster spot available. They did not activate Togiai which means Calcaterra is ready to make his debut.

I don't dislike Covey, but he has zero offensive snaps. I'm not sure I see the need to put him on the active roster to return a couple of punts a game.

A muffed punt can turn a game around, you need someone who can competently field a punt. Nobody else on the roster fits that role. Covey is an experienced returner. Greg Ward is the next guy that has some experience but he is on IR. Perhaps they will go with Ward after this week if he is eligible to come off IR. He at least can take some reps as receiver as well.

That is a pretty low bar. The Eagles have plenty of players who can call for a fair catch and catch a ball. Covey doesn't even return kicks, just punts, and I don't think he plays on ST coverage.

I think that is fine if you are going to use the PS to fill that role, but I don't think it's great to fill an active roster spot for it.

Also, Quez did return punts on college. Ward would be a decent option if available.

I'm not advocating them using the roster spot on Covey, just pointing out that this is the last time they can activate him from the practice squad. I agree successfully fielding a punt is a low bar, but it is a necessary skill set in the NFL. If you want to bang Howie for not addressing special teams needs enough, that is probably fair, but he did a lot elsewhere.

Wentz and his offense eviscerated by Gannon's D in their own stadium. Good to see. Only one TD despite almost a prevent defense most of 2nd half for Eagles. Probably not entirely on Gannon since offense turned conservative in 2nd half as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if Doug doesn't come in and steal one in Philly. Then eagles have not yet played a full game (haven't needed to) and the Jags defense is real good and young. not sure about their offense. we'll see. what I would love to see by the end of the day is the eagles at 4-0 and the saints losing another game.

The Eagles went 3 weeks with an empty roster spot, and ended up signing the guy we all thought they would sign anyway. Each week, each NFL team can protect 4 players on the practice squad from being signed, I imagine Covey was one of those four. In the process, they lost Clark and Awosika from the practice squad. I'm sure that Covey had one of the protected spots on the practice squad, I wonder if they would still have one of those lineman if Covey had filled the 53 man roster spot allowing someone else to be on the protected practice squad spot? Maybe small potatoes in the grand scheme of things, but I just don't understand why they wasted that 53 man spot for three weeks. Knock on wood that that the O-line stays relatively healthy this year.

They kept the roster spot open as an insurance policy against injury, or as a place for a punt returner they valued more than Covey. With an open roster spot they can make claims off of 31 other practice squads if the find someone they really want or need.

I think it just means they didn't value Clark or Awosika as much as the fans did.

Is this really a thing? I can understand waiting to add Covey after his options are out, but keeping an open roster spot doesn't seem to make much sense.
