Sure, he had some problems, but they were not the reason TB stunk or why Winston did not win more games as the QB. The organization is rotten and the team they fielded during his tenure were mediocre to bad. Does Winston have flaws as a QB? Sure, but the most important thing about a backup is they can come in, run the same system and keep you in the running while your starter recovers.
If Winston is such a horrible character and person and has lost all value, why did one of the best HC and a well run organization sign him as their backup? Why would Payton jeopardize his team chemistry? Why would he ruffle his franchise QB with such a burden? Why would he shove Taysom Hill aside and give the #2 job to a malcontent? LIkely because Winston is not as bad as you describe.
Again, are there flaws in Newton's game? Yes, but again he won 68 games in the NFL and led a team to a SB that did not have much besides him on offense. His athleticism and arm combined with Sanders, Ertz, Jackson, Reagor et al. could be dangerous. Again, I do not see his "issues" as you describe them to be so outrageous or disqualifying for our roster. If we can bring in Vick and make it work, we certainly could with Newton.
I never said he was a cancer or anything. What I said is his selection and it being a 2nd rd pick sends very clear messages to Wentz, Sudfeld and the rest of the roster. It undermines Wentz right after we signed him to a massive long term contract and leaves Sudfeld basically out to dry. Players understand football is a business, but I find it hard to believe there would not be some of the vets ticked off by what the organization did to Wentz and Wentz himself likely has many questions.
Plus, again, we have no idea if Hurts will ever pan out. You can say that is true about every draft pick, but a 2nd rd pick is much more important than a 5th or 6th rd flyer. This is NOT a flyer, the Eagles appear serious about challenging Wentz and grooming his replacement. Not a backup. The Eagles by selecting him in the 2nd rd expect Hurts will be the starter and Wentz will either be gone or retired due to injury.
Again, I totally understand the Eagles must protect themselves by having a capable backup, but again using a 2nd rd pick is NOT to get a backup QB. It is to get an eventual starter and again we have no idea if Hurts will ever be "capable" at this level. To say the Eagles now have a good backup is laughable. We have no idea what he will become and with the Eagles very mixed record of developing QB, color me skeptical.
Again, using a premium 2nd rd pick for a backup QB is a ludicrous waste of resources. It is like using a 1st rd pick on a kicker. They expect Hurts to become the starter, otherwise they would not have made the move. I do NOT expect him to have a chance to do that until 2022.
I'm not putting any burden on Hurts, the Eagles have by using their only 2nd rd pick to select him and pretending they never could have expected the major negative reaction from the fanbase, media and (hopefully not) from maybe the locker room. They have made it crystal clear to everyone he is the heir apparent and it is only a matter of time unless he is a total flop.
How could one forget he was a 2nd rd pick? That is the whole point. It is a major gamble to use a pick that high on a QB when you already have a franchise QB who you just signed to a massive long term deal. As we saw with Kolb, it did not work, but we thankfully persuaded a bad team to give us a sweetheart deal to take him off our hands. I doubt we'll be able to do with Hurts if he does not pan out.
