He seems better than the typical minor league signing. Here is our veteran-ish catcher in AAA for next year (though Stubbs or Marchan will likely join him too).

Probably not, though we tend to overrate our prospects a bit. Henry is a bit older than Marchan but seems decent defensively and capable of delivering a 750 OPS in AAA. Is Marchan any better than that these days?

50-50 Marchan gets through. His lack of options limits his value to every team that does not see him as a sure fire major league backup. If Stubbs beats him out, Marchan could easily have one of those "bouncing between 4 different organizations" seasons.

I think Marchan will win the MLB job. Odds are he still gets banged up. Heck, odds are JT does too. So Stubbs will get 20 or 30 games, but he's the one who can be called up and optioned freely.

What are the rules on Rule 5 minor league selections?
Do you get a year to evaluate them before having to protect them on the 40?
If so, great to gamble on younger LA players who use up their 6 years by 22-23 but could still make a jump.

No rules. They are Phillies. They need to go on the 40 whenever they need to go on the 40 but also they'd have to perform in such a way to make them attractive to another team in the major league Rule 5.

That's correct.

To be clear, these are guys who not only were not on their former club's 40- man roster, they also were not on that organization's AAA winter reserve list (38 players max). They go on the Phils' AAA roster (for now; they don't have to stay there). Next November, if they're not added to the Phils 40-man roster, they'll be exposed to the major league portion of the Rule 5 draft; if they're not on the AAA winter roster, they'll be exposed (again) to the minor league portion.
