PHILLIES CLAIM BOURJOS FROM CARDINALS
The Phillies have claimed outfielder Peter Bourjos off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals, Vice President & General Manager Matt Klentak announced today.
Bourjos, 28, played in 117 games for the Cardinals last season and batted .200 with eight doubles, three triples, four home runs and five stolen bases.
According to FanGraphs, since Bourjos made his major league debut in 2010, he is averaging a 16.1 ultimate zone rating per 150 defensive games (UZR/150). That ranks third among all major league outfielders with at least 3,500 defensive innings played in that span, trailing only Kansas City’s Lorenzo Cain (19.0) and Jason Heyward (18.3).
A native of Park Ridge, Ill., Bourjos was originally selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the 10th round of the June 2005 draft. He was acquired by St. Louis along with outfielder Randal Grichuk from Los Angeles on November 22, 2013, in exchange for infielder David Freese and right-hander Fernando Salas.
Additionally, right-hander Nefi Ogando was claimed today by the Miami Marlins. Ogando, 26, appeared in four games last season for the Phillies.
The Phillies remain at 38 players on their 40-man roster.
