The Phillies signed free agent right-handed pitchers Andrew Bailey and Edward Mujica to minor league contracts with invitations to attend major league camp as non-roster invitees, Vice President & General Manager Matt Klentak announced today.
Bailey, 31, appeared in only 10 major league games last season, all in September, going 0-1 with a 5.19 ERA for the New York Yankees. In 28 combined minor league appearances with four different Yankee affiliates, he posted a 3-0 record with six saves, a 1.80 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 35.0 innings pitched (10.8 SO/9.0 IP).
A product of Paul VI High School in Haddonfield, N.J., Bailey has pitched in only 59 major league games over the past four seasons (2012-15) due to injuries. Prior to 2012, he spent three years as the closer for the Oakland A’s, amassing 75 saves in 84 opportunities (89.3%), a 2.07 ERA and holding opponents to a collective .188 batting average. Bailey won the AL Rookie of the Year award in 2009 and was named to the American League All-Star team in 2009 and 2010.
Bailey was originally a sixth-round selection by the A’s in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft. For his career, he is 11-13 with 89 saves and a 2.74 ERA in 216 games for the A’s (2009-11), Boston Red Sox (2012-13) and Yankees (2015).
Mujica, also 31, went 3-5 with one save and a 4.75 ERA in 49 combined games last season between the Red Sox and A’s. In his final 13 appearances of the season, he posted a 3.18 ERA.
A 2013 National League All-Star, Mujica has pitched in 13 career games at Citizens Bank Park, posting a 1.84 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 14.2 innings pitched (9.2 SO/9.0 IP).
Signed by the Cleveland Indians as an amateur free agent in 2001, the Venezuela native owns a career record of 24-28 with 50 saves and a 3.85 ERA in 494 games (four starts) for the Indians (2006-08), San Diego Padres (2009-10), Miami Marlins (2011-12), St. Louis Cardinals (2012-13), Red Sox (2014-15) and A’s (2015).
