PHILLIES SIGN HERRERA TO MULTI-YEAR CONTRACT
The Phillies have signed center fielder Odubel Herrera to a five-year contract through the 2021 season, Vice President & General Manager Matt Klentak announced. The deal also includes club options for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
Herrera, 24, batted .286 this past season with 21 doubles, six triples, 15 home runs, 87 runs scored and 25 stolen bases while also being selected to the National League All-Star team. According to Baseball Reference, Herrera’s 8.0 WAR over his first two seasons (306 G) ranks 64th among all major league position players since 1901 and is the 2nd-highest ever by a Phillies player through their first two years, trailing only Dick Allen (8.8 WAR in 172 G from 1963-64).
Over the last two seasons (2015-16), Herrera leads all Phillies players in batting average (.291), OPS (.773), hits (314), runs (151), doubles (51), stolen bases (41) and total bases (452).
Herrera was acquired by the Phillies via the 2014 Rule 5 Draft from the Texas Rangers.
