[size=150] PHILLIES ANNOUNCE 2016 PLAYER DEVELOPMENT STAFF [/size]
The Phillies have finalized their player development staff for the 2016 season, Joe Jordan, Director, Player Development, announced today. All managers will remain in place from last season.
At triple-A Lehigh Valley, Dave Brundage and Sal Rende both return as manager and coach, respectively. They will be joined by first-year triple-A pitching coach Dave Lundquist. The 2016 season marks the fourth for Brundage and is Rende’s 13th year with the Phillies organization and 10th, overall, at his current position. Lundquist had spent the last three years with double-A Reading.
Dusty Wathan is back for his ninth season with the Phillies and fifth straight as Reading’s manager. Frank Cacciatore will serve as Wathan’s coach while Steve Schrenk joins the staff in his 13th season as a minor league pitching coach with the Phillies. He spent last season with single-A Clearwater.
At Clearwater, Greg Legg will stay on as manager and Rob Ducey as his coach. Aaron Fultz moves up as the Threshers’ pitching coach after working in single-A Lakewood last season. Ducey will begin his third year with the Phillies and second straight with Clearwater.
Shawn Williams returns for his second year as Lakewood’s skipper with Nelson Prada as the coach. Second-year staff member Brian Sweeney will join them as the team’s pitching coach. Sweeney spent last season with the rookie-level Gulf Coast League Phillies.
After leading single-A Williamsport to a postseason berth in his first year with the organization, Pat Borders will once again helm the Crosscutters. Hector Berrios will be the pitching coach in his first year with the Phillies. Former major league assistant hitting coach John Mizerock has accepted a position as a coach for Williamsport. Mizerock will coach at Lehigh Valley until Williamsport’s season begins in June, at which point he will join the Crosscutters.
The Gulf Coast League Phillies staff will see the return of manager Roly deArmas and coach Rafael DeLima. The 2016 season with be deArmas’ 13th as manager of the GCL Phillies and 10th straight. DeLima will start his 17th year as a member of the Phillies player development staff and his fourth consecutive season at his current position. Eddie Dennis, who coached for Williamsport last year, will spend 2016 with the Gulf Coast League team while Hector Mercado rejoined the organization as the club’s pitching coach. Mercado, a left-hander, pitched parts of the 2002 and 2003 seasons for the Phillies.
The coordinator staff returns intact. Doug Mansolino (field), Andy Tracy (hitting/assistant field), Rafael Chaves (pitching), Chris Truby (infield), Andy Abad (outfield/baserunning), Ernie Whitt (catching), Joe Rauch (athletic training/rehab) and Jason Meredith (strength & conditioning) will all return with the addition of Ray Burris as the rehab pitching coach. Burris had spent the last three seasons as Lehigh Valley’s pitching coach. Carlos Arroyo, who enters his 41st year with the Phillies, will continue in his role as roving pitching coach.
