Right-hander Kevin Munson was selected by the Phillies in the major league portion of baseball’s annual Rule 5 Draft, Director of Professional Scouting Mike Ondo announced this morning.
Munson, 24, was the Phillies’ lone selection in the first round (4th overall) of the major league portion from the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. Originally selected in the fourth round of the 2010 draft by Arizona out of James Madison University, Munson split last season between double-A Mobile and triple-A Reno where he went a combined 2-4 with a 4.12 ERA in 53 relief appearances while averaging 10.87 SO/9.0 IP between the two clubs. Selected as a 2013 Southern League midseason All-Star, Munson was holding opposing hitters to a .157 average at the time of his promotion to Reno.
Munson pitched for Hermosillo in the Mexican Pacific League this offseason where he posted a 1.59 ERA in five relief appearances.
A native of Edison, N.J., Munson has gone 11-12 with a 4.42 ERA in 154 games during his career, averaging 11.17 SO/9.0 IP during his three seasons.
Right-hander Seth Rosin, who went 9-6 with a 4.33 ERA in 26 games last season for double-A Reading, was claimed by the New York Mets.
