Sad about Maddon, just watched the ESPN show about him this morning. Great guy, his wife is the star of the show, she is even more of a win-now driver than he was.

it is sad about Madden. He and Summerall made one of the best sportscaster teams ever. The 2 calls, from them, that i'll never forget: 1) the sequence when Dallas went for 4th and 1 at the Vet and were stopped but the refs said the 2 minute warning had occurred first. Cowboys ran the same play again and were stopped (Merrill's call was outstanding as well). And 2) the Eric Allen interception against Boomer and the jets at the Meadowlands. Great call. it ended with the film crew showing the sun setting and i'm not sure who said it but the paraphrase was, the sun is setting on the Jets. Both calls are memorable.

Totally agree, Madden & Summerall were the best football team I ever heard.

That he was also a HOF and SB winning head coach and stayed involved in the game for years after his broadcasting career is incredible.

Any football fan should watch the ESPN special on Madden they ran last week. It is great, especially given yesterday’s sad news. His wife is pretty much as funny and straightforward as he is and his two sons both come off as great “kids” (they are probably about 60)

I had forgotten he was originally a 21st round pick of the Eagles. Got hurt his first year and spent the whole time watching Norm Van Brocklin getting ready for games and learning. He said that is what made him want to be a teacher, which of course lead to coaching.

He said he really didn’t want to be an announcer because he just didn’t have any respect for how they did things, when he was finally talked into it he said, I am going to do this so I can teach fans about what they are seeing. He did that better than anyone.

Sorry youngster. Tom Brookshier and Pat Summerall we’re heads and shoulders above Summerall and Madden. That pair made CBS broadcasts the gold star level of broadcasting. Their steady broadcast and analysis were outstanding. Madden went over the top on many occasions with his descriptions of the play in the game. Summerall and Brookie gave the viewer the sparks notes of the game.
Like Ray Scott once said, broadcasters don’t need to insult the viewers with long descriptions of what they saw. It’s television. They saw it. “Starr to Dale. Touchdown.” That was the play. Now sensibly discuss how and why it happened. No need to go bonkers about it like Madden often did. The viewers need analysis not cheerleading.

flyers, remember when Brookie lost his watch over the railing at the vet. They showed him for some reason, he might have been cheering, and you saw his watch release and fall down, Brookie was then leaning over to yell down below for someone to get it for him.

My wife has a record made in the 60s where Sam Jones, K.C. Jones, and Satch Sanders are singing, accompanied by my wife's childhood piano teacher. (K.C. could sing. The other two...not so much.) I met Sam Jones a few years ago and told him she had the record. He responded, "I was having a good day until you reminded me of that record!"

I have a record of Larry Bowa, Greg Luzinski, Mike Schmidt and Dave Cash singing "Phillies Fever", an awful disco style recording, along with a signed ball with their signatures. I actually was in the studio when they recorded it!

I actually found it. I forget Garry Maddox was on it too.
