PHILLIES CLAIM NICASIO
The Phillies have claimed right-hander Juan Nicasio from the Pittsburgh Pirates, Vice President & General Manager Matt Klentak announced today.
Nicasio, who turns 31 today, appeared in 65 games for the Pirates this season and posted a 2.85 ERA and 1.12 WHIP, averaged 9.0 strikeouts per 9.0 innings pitched and held opponents to a .222 average and .617 OPS. He has a 0.75 ERA in 13 appearances against the National League East this season, 12 of which have been scoreless.
Since the beginning of the 2016 season, Nicasio has struck out 27.8% of the batters he has faced in 105 relief appearances.
A veteran of seven major league seasons, Nicasio has gone 34-37 with a 4.61 ERA in 258 appearances (82 starts) for the Colorado Rockies (2011-14), Los Angeles Dodgers (2015) and Pirates (2016-17).
To make room for Nicasio on the 40-man roster, 1B/OF Brock Stassi was designated for assignment.
