Right-hander Joe Blanton was claimed off waivers and traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations, Senior Vice President & General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced today. To fill his spot on the 25-man roster, right-hander B.J. Rosenberg was recalled from triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Blanton, 31, went 8-9 with a 4.59 ERA in 21 games (20 starts) for Philadelphia this season. He ranked second to Cole Hamels on the Phillies starting staff in wins, innings (133.1) and strikeouts (115). During his time with the Phillies, he posted a 34-25 record with a 4.47 ERA in 105 games (100 starts). In nine postseason games (six starts) with the Phillies, Blanton went 2-0 with a 4.23 ERA. He also hit a three-run homer off Edwin Jackson in Game 4 of the 2008 World Series.
Since 2008, Blanton has the fourth-best winning percentage among all major league starters after the All-Star break (.739, 17-6). For his career, he is 38-20 (.655) with a 3.83 ERA in 99 games (91 starts) after the break.
Right-hander Kyle Kendrick will start tonight for the Phillies against the Arizona Diamondbacks at 7:05pm.
