PHILLIES CLAIM ROBERTS OFF WAIVERS
The Phillies have claimed left-hander Ken Roberts off waivers from the Colorado Rockies, Senior Vice President & General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced today. Upon acquiring him, the Phillies optioned Roberts to triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Roberts, 27, pitched the last six seasons (2010-15) in the Rockies’ minor league system, almost exclusively in relief, and compiled a record of 22-10 with a 2.61 ERA and .240 average against in 216 games (two starts). Additionally, he allowed only 16 home runs over 324.2 innings pitched (0.44 HR/9.0 IP). This season, Roberts has posted a 1-3 record with a 5.12 ERA for triple-A Albuquerque, but has appeared in only 23 minor league games after spending time on the disabled list for left elbow inflammation.
Originally a 25th-round selection by the Rockies in the 2010 draft, Roberts made his major league debut earlier this season. He appeared in nine games, including two against the Phillies, and went 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA. Six of his nine major league appearances were scoreless. Roberts had been designated for assignment on August 28.
