Heyman also links Phillies to Kwan. Tantalizing as it is to imagine moving Nick I'm not sure that is it exactly. Kwan would be a fine alternative to Marsh or Kepler but you probably still want another RH bat with thump even if Nick stays.

One would have to assume he would replace Marsh or Kepler in the lineup and not Castellanos. Not a CF but I guess you could call up Crawford and trade both Marsh and Kepler if you had to.

Kwan is great and in the prime of his career with 2 more years of control. Just not sure how the dominoes would fall if they really went after him (and he would be expensive). He is kind of everything we want Marsh to be except a CF defensively.

I would not trade Painter, Abel, Crawford, Tait, Escobar, or Nori (based mostly on his recent play). I’d consider the rest in the right deal, but it would have to be for a consistent, controllable arm or bat. Miller would require a significant return. I doubt I’d find a deal I’d like.

I mean, the odds are that at best two of those seven prospects mentioned will have a significant impact (not easily replaced) - at best. More likely one.

But you want to make them all untouchable.

People just overvalue prospect.

I wouldn't make anyone untouchable, but it's hard to imagine getting someone back who is good enough to let go of Painter. And trading Miller might be selling low.

I had almost forgotten Bohm was hurt. But Heyman is not reporting anything here really. All the trade gossip writers are doing Hazan a favor this year that is for sure

Bohm is supposed to be back in a couple of weeks. I can't see him being replaced unless the injury is worse than indicated. Kemp and Sosa will be just fine for 10-15 more games.

It seems like no top end prospects are getting shipped out to new teams. I hope we don't get fleeced ......

We have not seen any top relievers get traded yet. I'd be fine trading for Seranthony for a couple of prospects ranked beyond 15. Just worried about the price for somebody like Jax noted above.

Trouble is he's an overpriced rental. They trade for him, and then the statistical post-season odds break the way they usually do? The Phils lose a series at some point in the playoffs, Suarez walks, and the real return for what we traded away is zilch.

This is the general problem with deadline trades (holds for the NHL as well), if you're not good enough to win now, how many acquisitions can actually move the needle? So overpaying for maybe a 1 game regular season win and maybe one key AB or inning in the post-season is a good way to deep six a franchise if you do it on a regular basis.

Replacing a .700 OPS hitter with a .750 OPS hitter or a 4.00 ERA/FIP RP with a 3.50 ERA/FIP RP just isn't going to make much difference.

If you want to make a run, you're best bet is fixing Luzardo, maybe giving Ranger more rest, getting Nola back, bringing p Crawford and hoping Kempe will improve down the stretch with more PA. Long odds, but similar to those from 2nd tier acquisitions but no cost.

The best move is Ramon Laureano. RH power. Decent fielding outfielder. Under contract for an extra year at $6 million. Give them Rincones and a reliever from AA or below. Throw in Kepler if you have to and cover 75% of his remaining salary. He is exactly what they need as a righ handed power bat and having him for another year at $6 million is super important. I do not see how Phils could go wrong with that deal.

That return seems awfully light for the Orioles given the season that Laureano is having and the cheap team option for next year.

I think he's going to cost more than you think - 2-3 prospects because of that extra year at a low price. Or he's not even available due to that year still being a very affordable option for an Orioles team that isn't necessarily giving up on next year.

But generally I agree. The trade deadline can't fix everything, but the Phillies need that RH power bat, or at least the platoon guy. And they still need Bohm and Nick. Even if they got Suarez, removing Bohm from the line-up entirely isn't necessarily optimal, and obviously neither is moving Harper or Schwarber positionally.
