They were hoping Walker could be passably mediocre, even with his velocity down, if his splitter was working he could probably be a 5.00 FIP pitcher. Not good, but good enough for the last month with an extended bullpen.

Coming off the sweep of the Rays, the Phillies are now 30 games over .500 at 88-58. They are the only team currently winning at a rate over .600 and lead the NL East, 8.0 games ahead of the Mets and 9.0 games ahead of the Braves. Sixteen games remain in the regular season, starting with the 3-game series with the Mets this weekend.

Next week they are on the road with three in Milwaukee and four in New York against the Mets. The final week of the season has them at home for three with the Cubs and then finishing with three in Washington.

The Brewers have really faded while the Phillies got hot again. We'll lead them by either four or five games tomorrow (they play tonight) and just one win in Milwaukee also seals the tiebreaker.

Phillies could also end up determining the last wild card. Braves playing LA this weekend so maybe it won't change (i.e. I hope the Mets lose at least twice and the Braves might too, though if they do better that would also help us with the #1 race). But by the time the Phillies get to Queens they could either keep it a close race or put the Mets over the top. Phillies could also clinch the division there.

Fangraphs now has Phillies with slight edge over Dodgers (96.9 wins to 96.8 wins, 96.9% chance of a bye to 96.2%). 100% for both teams too make playoffs.

MLB.com used to have elimination numbers in the standings but it seems to have discontinued that.

Mets have a .600 second-half winning percentage. Phillies .510. Braves .520. They are earning it, but Phillies are also in their way for seven games. Mets and Braves do play each other in the second-to-last series, that should be fun.

Also with tiebreakers the elimination numbers could be too variable, you might have a tiebreaker against one team but not in a three or four way tie...

Now that the Phils have tried everything else on Nola, sit him his next start. Gotta be fatigue and Nola must recover if the Phils are going all the way. Must.

When the Phils bring up a pitcher, many expect to see some promise of a future. Maybe he throws in the high nineties but can't cotrol it yet or maybe he's only got a ML sinker but nothing else. The last two the Phils brought up showed little promise. Hard to believe that's all there is.

Wonder how Turnbull is doing. Taking it very slow with him, but he might be the arm to back up Nola if Nola doesn't regain his chops.
