Air quality in NEPA is down to 317 from 397. So it’s getting better. Tomorrow night should be playable. Our hazard alert is til 11:00 a.m. tomorrow.

The current AQI forecast for tomorrow is 125, still not ideal and unhealthy for sensitive groups. I don't see any real reason to expect even young health athletes to perform
at an elite level while inhaling pollutants and not getting enough oxygen (while also taking in carcinogens).

But it also might be lower by the end of the day. No way to know for sure until it is closer.

Does MLB simply not want to mess up this week's schedule by more than a game or are they trying to set a precedent for what AQI games can be played in, as groundwork for expanding to Mexico City? Lehigh Valley with worst AQI in nation late afternoon. Worse than NYC, which was worst major city in world -- alt according to our local TV weatherman. Forecast change in wind direction expected to shift worst of smoke to Pittsburgh/Cleveland area tomorrow. Quebec apparently lacks resources needed to fight all the fires, so this could go on for more than a little while, depending upon wind direction.

I don't know that Quebec lacks resources anymore than Montana or California or Oregon or Washington or Alberta or BC. It just hasn't happened here as regularly before (Those 4-500 numbers are old hat in those places, though still fortunately extraordinary. But 150, 200, not so much alas).

As long as we're being cynical (per Mexico City comment) this is a perfect opening for all the MLB owners to ask for more stadium money to put on roofs everywhere.

WNBA called a game in NY because smoke was smelled inside the arena.

But I hope it never happens where every team has retractable domes. I realize some areas need them.. but they are not nice looking parks in my opinion.

I've never found Houston or Seattle to be any more or less aesthetically pleasing than CBP to be honest. All the ballparks in the post-Camden Yards era wound up being pretty generic IMO. At this point we should be so lucky as to settlle for retractable. Not just smoke, but heat, and levels of rain/cold beyond what used to be normal. Obviously baseball is an outdoor game.

I had not seen where the WNBA postponement had anything to do with air quality inside the arena, though that would certainly be an issue if they don't have proper filtration, plus you couldn't keep the smoke out with people coming and going. But I would think the real reason was to keep fans from being outside/on buses & subways going to the game. They just happen to be the only indoor league playing right now.

They are saying it's supposed to be better today and then worse tonight, though maybe not until after game would be over. If it's not played, it might just become one of those games they don't make up unless it's necessary, though obviously Detroit's not that far away.

The current Philadelphia public health advisory includes A) Don't go outside and B) avoid unnecessary car trips (and idling, as if that's okay otherwise). A bookstore in my South Philly neighborhood just cancelled its event that was supposed to be at 6pm tonight.

Meanwhile, yup (and hey if it's time to move all this to a different thread okay) if you watch a certain TV channel you'll be told the smoke is no big deal and that it's insane to wear a mask. Deja vu.

I mean I don’t know what you are talking about with Ben. The man can inhale crazy amounts of smoke, throw BP and long toss for 2 hours, go for a jog, workout in his cellar, and maintain his farm all in a day’s time. I think he’s some kind of super hero.

Potential mutual days off for the Phillies and Tigers going forward:

July 3: Phillies just had a home series vs. the Nationals before heading down to Tampa, Tigers on way back to Detroit from Colorado. Problem is that the Tigers would play on 17 straight days. Not sure that's permissible under the basic agreement.
August 14: Phillies just wrapped up a home series vs. Twins before heading to Toronto, Tigers between Boston and Minnesota. Problem is that the Phillies would play on 19 straight days.
August 24: Phillies between series at CBP between Giants and Cardinals. Phillies have days off the prior and the following week but the Tigers would be forced to play 20 straight days.
September 25: Phillies between home series versus Mets and Pirates, Tigers on way home from Oakland to Detroit to close out their season. Problem: 20 straight playing days for both teams,
