2023 Phillies/MLB Trade Deadline Speculation/Discussion

Rather than looking for places in the lineup that need to be bolstered via a trade, it would be more worthwhile to look at which internal areas need to upgrade their play. That means getting Schwarber out of LF and to DH; Harper to 1B and Bohm permanently to 3B; better play in the field and at the plate by Turner and Realmuto. There's nothing wrong with the pitching that players already in the organization can't cover. However unless corrections are mad at DH, LF, SS and C, this club isn't going anywhere.

This is the first time in like forever that we don’t need a bullpen guy st trade deadline. I suppose they will get another Strahm type, but who would go down. Silverado is the only one pitching badly and Seranthony who is on the DL

Arenado and the Phillies (among others) now becoming a big topic to give the media something to talk about during the all-star break. I learned this because "Bohm" was trending on Twitter.

I just have to say, these are the worst days of the sports year. Only Baseball is being played and to me this is 4 days with no games (the All Star game is nothing to me, last time I watched it Mike Schmidt was playing in it).

At least there was the draft from r some interest. I wish they would come up with something to make All Star week interesting, but the HR derby has lost its charm, I can't imagine an interesting skills challenge.

Maybe a real futures game, but even that seems thin. An old timers game like they used to have? Some of those were fun.

Hmmm. Eduardo Perez said that the Phillies could be a trade landing spot for Arenado. That would mean Bohm would have to go. WhT say you, Phillies fans?

Missanelli seems to believe Bohm would be included in the trade, which, sure! (I suppose since the Cards would want to resume competing immediately there is some logic to that, and Arenado is also not going to fetch a premium package unless there's also a little money in the deal. But obviously as a top player with years of control (and not that terrible an AAV though obviously the concern would be the last few years of the deal) he still costs you a couple of Top 10 prospects (if not Top 3-5).

I love Arenado, and I would have no problem replacing Bohm. But man, that contract…

I don't think the contract is really that bad. It's only $25 AAV. Obviously it depends greatly on how many good years he has left but I wonder if that really even matters? Get what you can from him for 2-3 years and by then JT, Castellanos and Schwarber will be off the books. Worst case he gives you 2-3 WAR for two years and 1 WAR in third; best-case he puts you over this year and also has one more 4 WAR year left in him (7 is too much to ask). If he's cooked by Year 5, who cares?

I think the asking price - and the asking price relative to the contract - is more the issue. And a tough call if you're DD and Middleton (even if it's an easy call here, we know there are people who would trade anyone for him and people who would trade no one for him). Hopefully not that tough though - you take all the money and keep the best prospects rather than buy cap relief with more prospects if you can.

Still fantasy baseball for now but he fits in so many ways (RH, RH power, good defender) and has basically the same BA and more RBIs than Bohm, and a much better OPS (because real power is still better than BA with RISP).

I doubt we trade for Arenado, but if we do Bohm has no place on the team going forward.

I would assume Bohm would be part of the trade. I would do this but the prospect cost can't be too high. A CF and a pitcher + Bohm? (Muzziotti or Rojas) + (Abel or McGarry) + Bohm? Expensive for an older player, but I think it needs to be really attractive for StL to do it.

I would look elsewhere.

Arenado does seem like a fit, but would again represent the replacement of a good young player earning a modest wage(Bohm). At some point the huge superstar contracts will drag the team down, and I assume that taking on Arenado's contract will preclude us from re-signing Nola (not to mention Hoskins). But maybe those two weren't going to stick around in any event, and our next young rising star becomes one of the current AAA outfielders.

A couple of top 3-5 prospects and Bohm. Nope, not worth it. Very good bat, but expensive contract, age 32, and his dWAR has turned negative this season. Going forward.... ?

Of course it depends on the trade price, but to me the biggest concerns are the length of Arenado's contract, his age, and the apparent defensive decline. I suspect the latter might be a bit of an anomaly since Arenado was still very good last year, and it's only half a season of data. Still, Fangraphs has him worse defensively at 3B this year than Bohm (though Alec has only 30-some games at 3B and has been bad at 1B the rest of the time).

I think Arenado will still be better than Bohm on both sides for the length of his contract though the gap will narrow over time. Even when the Phillies are spending stupid money, there is an opportunity cost to taking on that contract.
