2023 Phillies/MLB Trade Deadline Speculation/Discussion

Last night the OF was Schwarber, Rojas and Marsh with Harper as the DH. Last night it was Castellanos who sat. Who are you going to bench in order to play Phamm, Duvall or whoever? Is playing one of these guys an improvement over what the Phillies already have and at what acquisition price? Now if the Phillies are going to create room for an acquisition by moving out Schwarber or Castellanos, that’s a totally different situation but one which is doubtful.

Cave played first last night. He's the odd man out. Rojas (or Pache) the 4th OF normally.

I know people are excited about Rojas with good reason but he would likely not hold up to extended action or even be able to keep his roster spot unless they are prepared to trade (or release) Pache.

Yes, it's SSS but the kids should play regularly as long as the SSS is positive.

If they add just one right-handed bat it will be interesting to see what roster spot that bat replaces. Options are Harrison and Cave. Will they be comfortable with more offense and only one backup at all the infield positions? I would probably replace Harrison, but guessing the Phillies will replace Cave.

I'm a Cave kinda guy. That game he played against the O's showed me his desire. He hit like a champ at AAA, so he's gonna hit in the bigs soon as he gets enough ABs. If the Phils go with him, would not be the worst move. The remaining FAs might be minor upgrades, so why bother? Maybe they'll go for a pitcher.

No idea how they feel about Cave at 1B too. The new right-handed bat could easily have experience there if we are looking at power bats. Cave did not come up with a tough scoop last night on Bohm's throw. Not an easy play but one Hoskins probably makes because of experience. Pham and Hernandez have not played 1B but Duvall has (43 games though none since 2018 in the majors).

It is indeed a good question Andy raises. Baseball-wise I think it makes more sense to keep Cave to play LF against tough RHP when the new guy needs a day. But I wonder if they really are prepared to dump Harrison.

And if you really believe in Pache or Rojas may as well start playing them in CF against RHP (with Marsh in left).

If they really didn't make any trade at all I'd like to see Muzziotti instead of Cave.

I'm fascinated by the quiet (both in actuality and the rumor mill). Dombrowski is either going to blow us away with a couple of last-minute deals (perhaps even something truly unexpected) as the market comes to him or we might be admiring him for not panicking/overpaying/being reactive when the team is pretty good and marginal upgrades aren't available at marginal prices.

I was really expecting the Orioles to get him because he perfectly fits a need (and they have such a low payroll that even if they have to pick up $20 million in future years they could).

He probably would only approve a trade back to the Astros though.

Yeah I bet the Mets aren't getting that much. They probably had to take less to give him the team he wanted. And there's still money and risk attached for Houston. We'll see what Cohen bought this time i guess!

Same here. I don't necessarily think that it is essential that we do something though it never hurts to add another arm or two. Yes, here we would praise him for not panicking. However, the rest of the fanbase will be livid. Bottom line is that I don't see a lot out there that I think can really help us.

The Mets will receive OF Drew Gilbert from the Astros in the deal for Verlander, per source, plus at least one other propsect. It's not known how much money the Mets will send to Houston.

Clifford was the Astros #4 prospect and Gilbert was #1

The Astros were very reticent to part with Ryan Clifford, and it's easy to see why: He's already raking at High-A after going to them in the 11th round last year. Just turned 20 within the last two weeks. A number of evaluators see him as a superior prospect to Drew Gilbert.
