Baseball America FCL top 20:

8 raylin heredia

“ He’s got big-time bat speed and the potential to hit for both average and power if he can find a more consistent approach and get a bit better at recognizing pitches.”

Otherwise it’s a list full of Yankees, Mets, Red Sox and Orioles.

Well, AAA record is deceiving, mostly retreads.
However, Clearwater was impressive, if they can repeat that next year and the kids to the same at JS, they may be for real.

2023 Paul Owens Award Winners are RHP Orion Kerkering and OF Johan Rojas

I feel like most years at least one of the winners is someone who conspicuously won't end up thriving in the majors. Feel pretty good about these two.

The League MVP did not win the Owens award...they're waiting until next year when he makes it to AA.

I think they see the award as a hybrid of best player and best prospect who has improved the most. Crawford would have been an equally solid choice as Rojas, but Rojas has a bigger stage now.

Kerkering seems an obvious choice playing well at every level in the system and we really (unfortunately) have not had any lights out performance from a starter like with Painter last year. Abel's second half has been pretty good, but Kerkering has been great all year.

Sadly, very few pitchers who have won the Owens award have contributed to the Phillies. Hamels, Madson, and Bottalico are the only ones I see, out of 35 winners before Painter last year. A few have had solid careers mainly outside Philly (Carrasco, Happ, Andy Ashby). Of course, not many Phillie pitching prospects at all have done much in the last 40 years...

Funny, Kerkering said it was his fastball that got him through the system, not his slider. Maybe he is trying to throw opposing hitters off the scent...
