2022 Phillies Spring Training

Remember we have 2 extra relievers on the roster the first few weeks. If starters can only go 4-5 innings (or 3-4 with Wheeler and Suarez) that is OK. I'd rather have a few good innings from everybody backed by the extra relievers than push the starters too hard.

Ryan Kriedler makes two outs for the Tigers in the 7th as the Tigers score 8 runs. It must feel bad to make the first and second outs in the same inning. They now lead 14-6 after 7 innings. Tigers score 14 on 10 hits and 11 walks.

Good news is that other than Brogdon, the Phillies bad pitching has come from those who will be in the minors this season.

It would be great if the Phillies have a couple multiple inning relievers to start the season as the bullpen will have to pick up more innings than normal as the starters build up strength to go 5 to 7 innings. It will probably be May until we see starters going the normal distance.

Joe Girardi says Bryson Stott will play a few games at 3B, including today, and maybe a few at 2B. No mandate about starting Stott’s service clock on opening day, according to Girardi, but if he’s on OD roster, #Phillies want him to play every day, even if it’s at diff positions.

hahahaha. After Kingery this is actually a good way to get the fan base supporting his service time manipulation.

I don't really have a problem with it in theory, and certainly not for spring training. I also don't think it's going to happen. But if you have to sit Bohm, Didi and Segura 2 games a week to accomodate Stott you probably just want to give Stott a position. There aren't many DH opportunities available for those three IFs anymore either.

Man Stott has been good at the plate so far this spring.

I'd be stunned if he makes the team, but if they did commit to him then it makes the lineup and bench much more interesting. Unlike Kingery, he has played 2B and 3B along with SS consistently in the minors. The lineup also is pretty right-handed now, especially as Vierling looks to get more (not all) playing time in CF with Herrera out. I imagine Moniak or Haseley will make the team to give them a left-handed CF option. They just have not played well enough to earn the long side of a platoon.

The second question is whether Stott takes Bohm's spot or the 26th spot on the roster (i.e. Torreyes). I would hope Bohm makes the team too. If Bohm struggles then a Stott platoon would be L/R and might help both of them ease their way in. Add in an occasional start at SS or 2B and you have enough playing time to justify Stott on the roster while also seeing what Didi has left.

This is the question where Stott clearly is one of their best 26 players. Bohm is probably too. Can the manager get them enough playing time and occasionally sit veterans like Didi to make it work? There is an argument that Stott should play every day in AAA since he hasn't yet, but I would counter that he already has an advanced feel for the strike zone AND he had the extra year at the alternate site so it is not as if the team would be rushing him.

This is still tea leaf reading from Salisbury, but most likely scenario if they do prioritize Stott is that Bohm gets sent down. But certainly it would be silly to give a roster spot to Torreyes (or Maton) when Stott could also play SS (and Camargo can play third).

The starts at 2B are what would be hard to come by.

This was pretty much inevitable once they DFA’ed him. It’s better than losing him to a waiver claim, I think.

Never a bad thing to get something (and trade a 40 guy for a non-40 guy). But also a good chance Kapler and that excellent SF front office/coaching staff leads to some regretful future posts.

Moniak with his third spring home run is at least showing signs of life. He probably needs to gets regular AAA at bats. I don’t see any way he makes the opening active roster.

Good win today. Five home runs. Didi hitting over .300 and looking much better than last season.

Also happy to see Nelson with another two inning outing. Gave up a run (home run) but spring ERA is just 1.80. We need some relievers that go more than one inning.

The most exciting thing so far is the performance of Vierling, Stott and, Moniak. Kevin long must truly be a magician to have turned Moniak around so quickly. It has been a while since we have young players to be excited about who could make the team out of Spring Training. Stott in particular really looks like he has a very solid hitting approach.

I'm glad Stott's having a good spring but I still feel a bit burned by the Phillies throwing caution to the wind and putting Kingery on the ML roster and, in the end, throwing him in over his head--and possibly wrecking his career--just because he had a great spring in 2018. The fact that they might do so with Stott--and have him play a new position just like Kingery-- makes the similarities all too eerie for me.

It is not really new for Stott though. When promoted Kingery had played 2B in the minors except for 6 games (4 at 3B and 2 at SS). Stott has already played more than 30 games at 2B and 3B and that does not include time at the alternate site where he also played lots of non-SS. Plus it is easier for a natural SS to play 2B and 3B than it is for a 2B to play SS which is what we asked Kingery to do.

The defense is the least of my concerns with promoting Stott. I am more concerned with him getting regular playing time and whether his knowledge of the strike zone (better than Kingery already) translates into the majors without much AAA time.

Sam Coonrod has a strained right shoulder. He had a MRI late last week. Shut down from throwing 5-7 days, keeping him from making Opening Day roster.
