2022 Phillies Spring Training

MLB Network today. Annnouncers just mentioned Fangraphs has Phillies projected at 88 wins, still third place.

This is my expectation as well. Mets and Braves are better than us. Our defense and starting pitching just are going to hurt us. Ranger isnt going to post a sub 2 ERA. Wheeler probably wont go as deep into games. Nola may be better than last year but I dont expect him to get back to the elite way he looked a couple years ago.

Well, it's still a higher number than we've heard since the season they signed Bryce. And I believe that also makes us the last playoff team.

Still could go either way - another ho-hum 82-84 or an "everything goes perfectly" 90+. I haven't looked at the sportsbook win totals yet (I won big last year on the over but it looked pretty shaky there at the end).

I think they started that during the pandemic startup but have kept it. I guess no harm since it is spring training.

Zamby, he was more efficient than it looked. he had a few pitches that he got squeezed on and a few that he fooled the batters on nice breaking stuff and the "checked swings" were not called.he was better than it looks on paper.

It’s always hard to judge pitchers based on the first few outings in the spring but I will say it is discouraging to see the hits and walks given up by Gibson, Familia, and Hand today. On plus side, the Phillies defeat the Yankees. Impressed by Stott so far. Two more hits (2 for 2) and a walk today.

To me, the biggest fear for this team is that we are counting on may older guys (not old in baseball terms, but not young) and really just have a starting lineup. Our backups are laughably bad, we literally don't have anyone "pushing" for more playing time that is being blocked by our FA signings.

We will have injuries and every game our starting position players miss will be a big drop off. That and our starting pitching has no depth at all, we need a lot of luck.

The back-ups don't seem especially bad to me, except in the areas where the starters aren't good to begin with. i.e. Camargo and Vierling are both solid bench players but Bohm is still a question mark and now Vierling is the starter with Herrera out. And back-up shortstops and catchers are never guys you want in the starting line-up but they are also not exciting to see in a game pretty much ever. And that's it, you only get four in the DH era.

Stott, Bohm and Vierling are really what the season rises or falls on, unless Didi or Herrera surprise. But if the bullpen is decent the offense should keep the team above .500 for a few months, at which point they will have to see where they are at with SS, 3B and CF. Need for a starting pitcher at the deadline probably goes without saying.

Moniak and Hoskins with HR's have the Phils up 4-0 in the 3rd. Vierling rbi 3B as well. Eflin 2 no hit (1 BB 1K) outing.

Eflin was impressive in his debut. Brogdon, on the other hand, stinks. Walked three and has been replaced leaving the bases loaded.

Connor Brogdon, who figures to start the season in the pen, gets one out on 28 pitches in the third inning before being lifted. He leaves the bases loaded on three walks. Not impressive. Jacob Hernandez the new pitcher for the Phillies, bases loaded, one out. Brogdon does have options but hopefully, he was just off a little today and bounces back to earn the spot in the pen.

Vierling tripled ahead of Moniak's home run in the second inning. Moniak's homer off the batters eye in dead center. Hoskins home run went well out in right center.

Hernandez faces two, sac fly and K. Tigers score one run on no hits in the bottom of the third. 4-1 Phillies going to the fourth inning.

Eflin pitched two good innings. Only 12 pitches in each inning. Still, we are getting close to opening day and need to see pitchers going more than 2 or 3 innings per start.

End of 5 innings, 6-4 Phillies.

Didi long home run to the Margaritaville Patio in right put Phillies up by 4 again in the top of the 5th. Tigers score two on a double following two walks in the bottom of the 5th.

Tigers have 4 runs on two hits. All four runners scoring were walked.

But it's only a spring training game, I tell myself. Once the season starts, our pitchers surely will not walk 7 in 5 innings.

Eflin pitched two good innings. Only 12 pitches in each inning. Still, we are getting close to opening day and need to see pitchers going more than 2 or 3 innings per start.

2 or three innings is pretty normal for the first couple of starts, and this season they simply aren't going to be able to build up to 4-5 for very long. Thus the expanded rosters. And even worse for the Phillies given Eflin hasn't pitched since July, Wheeler got a late start and Suarez was on the shelf for a bit too.

Heck even last year Wheeler only averaged 3 2/3 innings in six starts. Both length and fine-tuning are going to be an issue the first two weeks of the season.

Tigers take the lead in the 7th inning as the lead off hitter is walked and comes on to score for the fourth time this game. So far, 9 walks in less than 7 innings of pitching by the Phillies costing so far, 5 runs. Terrible baseball by the Phillies pitchers today. Singer leaves getting only one out in the 7th and leaves the bases loaded. I look forward to the days when we don't see a run of minor league pitchers each day. Then results like this game will really hurt.

Phillies had a 4 run lead twice in this game and now trail the Tigers.

EDIT: Still only one out in the 7th, but now 12-6 Tigers.
