That was a diving catch because he broke back on a softish high liner; it was a nice recovery, but that should have been a routine play.

As good as his stuff looked, he was still intentionally pitching up in the zone which has been getting killed the last 2 years.

You can see a much more focused intent to sink down to his arm side in 2019 than he did in 2021 on baseball reference fastball heat maps

Here we go again. But I don't see a bench with both Camargo and Torreyes.

Not so sure the manager is thinking that. Right now the roster seems largely set on the position player side:

OF: Harper, Castellanos, Schwarber, Herrera, Vierling
C: Realmuto, Stubbs
IF: Hoskins, Segura, Gregorius, Bohm, Camargo

That is 12 players with room for 1 more utility player and Camargo is not a great SS. I was figuring Stott might have a chance, but ultimately will go to AAA to play every day. Then Maton is the next alternative along with a few AAAA players they signed like Yairo Munoz (that Ruben was gushing over on the telecast yesterday).

A competition between Maton, Munoz, and Torreyes seems most likely now for the 26th spot. Remember we need fewer pinch hitters with the DH and the abnormally high number of DH candidates on our roster. The 26th roster spot needs to be able to play good defense at multiple positions.

Yeah, I forget which writer it was, but one of the articles about the Castellanos signing said the last bench slot likely goes to a utility guy. It probably should be Didi (i.e. Stott and Bohm should start). But otherwise it should be Maton who was actually not worse than Torreyes last year, and is on the 40. In theory any utility guy who can play SS well can also cover CF too.

But Camargo also seems like a questionable signing if his bat doesn't return and he can't back up shortstop. He's 3B insurance and as an upside play could be in the 2B mix next year. But right now Didi could play 3B and 2B too. So can Vierling. And all those things describe Kingery too.

Kent Emanuel to the 60-day IL for the roster spot needed for Schwarber. Still one more move coming for Castellanos. Emanuel was hurt when claimed on waivers (though I thought teams were not supposed to waive injured players).

I like getting Torreyes in on a minor league contract. That may factor in his starting in AAA but I expect he will be with the Phillies sometime during the season. Remember how many players they went through last season. Hopefully, they will have fewer injuries this season. Even so, it is good to have extra players in the system that can be called to the active roster on short notice and have the experience and ability that Torreyes brings.

Any word on starting the season with a slightly larger active roster? I have seen speculation but have not seen that it is going to happen.

Looks like there was no TV for the game today with the Braves. I had the interactive box score from MLB on my laptop. I left to do something with the Phillies up 1-0 going into the bottom of the 8th. Sadly, Braves scored 5 in that half inning to go on to a 5-1 win. As in game one, Stott, Bohm, Maton, and Camargo were the "big" names playing today. On the pitching side, Gibson started and went two scoreless innings followed by Coonrad with a scoreless inning, Sanchez with a scoreless inning and McArthur with two scoreless innings. Marvel then gave them a scoreless 7th to run the staff scoreless run to 14 innings, but he came back in the 8th and was charged with 5 earned runs. Perhaps he should have only gone one inning today. Another typical early spring training game.

There was a radio feed, and as much as I usually enjoy Larry Anderson, he was a bit annoying today. If he knows so much, why isn't he a coach or a manager?

For what it's worth, Erik Kratz joined Franzke and LA in the radio booth yesterday (or was it Friday?), and IMHO he showed quite a bit of promise. LA only does home games now, and presumably will be doing less and less as he ages.

LA was Reading's pitching coach in 1995-96 and SWB's in 1997. He was up with the big club in September of 1997 when Rich Ashburn passed (MLB allowed September recall coaches as well at that point). The following offseason, the Phillies named him as Whitey's replacement.

Looked like either the left fielder or center fielder of average defensive ability could have turned the ball into an out, but neither caught it and it goes for a double. I guess we need to get use to bad fielding although the outfielders playing today are supposedly the better fielders.

Looked like Vierling and Moniak didn't communicate. Vierling looked upset thinking he could have gotten it had Moniak not slid into him. Just an observation.
