Definitely Arbuckle, plus the picks were both high and plentiful, and Wade didn't trade anyone away.

It also didn't completely end after that core group, they just started trading the last remaining bunch of good prospects, with good reason. Happ, Carrasco, D'arnaud, Vilar. Brown was the last of that generation (it could have been him instead of Taylor at the time of the Halladay trade).

Gillick struck gold with his Werth connection and I'm not sure the Phillies really knew what they had in Victorino, they just got lucky another team did not (in that he was released from the Rule 5 stipulation).

The Gillick/Amaro brain trust also turned to be pretty bad at acquiring other teams' prospects. From Lee to Hamels.

Wolever seemed like an Arbuckle-light. Wanted to emulate the cost-effective college strategy of the As even though the organization was just way behind on the analytics.

Well not strictly true. Only his last draft in 2014 was college heavy. And yes, that was simplistic analytics, basically from published list. That also was his best draft, netting Nola and Hoskins. All of his other drafts were H.S. heavy, with the top pick always being H.S. He was Arby's protegee, but never connected as Arby did. Arby claimed a lot of his success in later years stems from unification of scouting and player development departments under him. Always rivalry, and I guess pulling in opposite direction, between scouting and development prior to that. Wolever did hit on Crawford, but totally whiffed on LGJ. Some of top picks derailed by injury.

Pretty sure that the rumor on that 2014 draft was that they already told Wolever he was being replaced after the season and for the 2014 draft he was to draft only college players (he took one HS guy Sam McWilliams in Round 8).

At the time it seemed like they were also only interested in quicker help. Nola wasn't supposed to have to wait seven years to pitch in the playoffs (if that turns out to happen), he was supposed join Hamels and Morgan (and even maybe Lee and Burnett) in the 2015 playoffs.

He went college heavy in 2014 because advisors/agents didn't trust him after he turned in their 4th and 5th round picks from the previous year for having agents when they didn't sign with the Phillies. The draft is all about knowing the signing number and he could no longer have those negotiations.

But those two draftees were college players.

yeah but college players are still a bit more of a known quantity (and with more of a fixed value). So if the agents/reps aren't helping you out it's still less risky than guessing what a HS player wants (and if he's worth it).

Back to the topic at hand. Still no announcements, but Lehigh Valley and Reading are scrimmaging tomorrow so we should get some pretty big clues at least.

For those of you that like to plan ahead....the JerseyShore Blue Claws will be at Wilmington, Delaware from Tuesday May 17th - Sunday May 22nd. I hated when MLB took a minor league level away but I did benefit from the restructuring that put JerseyShore in the same league as Wilmington.

Aberdeen brings them a bit closer to me also.

I guess they are continuing with the 6 game home series from last year. I know it reduces travel for the players, but in general I am not a huge fan of this schedule which can get to be a bit boring and also gives you fewer opportunities to see the same club on the road. Players keep facing the same relievers too.

Hopefully they go back to the old schedule next week though I have no problem with the additional off days (1 a week) on the schedule. It just does not have to be the same day every week.

I hated when MLB took a minor league level away but I did benefit from the restructuring that put JerseyShore in the same league as Wilmington.

MLB giveth and taketh away. Now I have limited opportunity to see JS (and LV). JS used to come in twice a year to Greensboro (sometimes 3x). They do come in August - so depending on teaching schedule it is still possible. Last year I did not see them. I miss seeing Wilmington as well, but that could be said about any team due to the 6 game schedules - you see less teams and often the same ones many times. Sigh

So many more teams in the Northeast and Southeast. I've mostly lived in markets where there were only ever seven other teams to see all season, because those were the whole leagues. With no others within a day's drive. Same thing when I used to have AA season tix in Texas, Texas League was eight teams and that was all you had (though since then there's been expansion with the PCL markets).

Couldn't ever get that passionate about it either with few NL East prospects to watch (let alone Phillies). Would have been different back in the day!

The entire state of Illinois has only 2 minor league teams.. and one is near the Wisconsin border. Peoria is the only other city in the entire state to have minor league baseball. The state capitol, Springfield, had minor league baseball until 1993 when they lost the team due to not upgrading the ball park

Rockford has got wood bat/college now? That's what we have in Portland (the single A team is a solid 40 minutes out of town).

Jersey Shore has always struck me as an odd one. It's just as close as Allentown (depending which part of Philly or South Jersey you live in) but just doesn't seem on most fans' radar. Or maybe it's just that most of the fans on this board have always been closer to Scranton and Allentown and Reading.

We are closer to Reading and obviously Allentown. Have been to a couple Phillies games at SWB, but that is farther and the entrance road is (or at least was back in the day) a royal pain. We've been to 3 games at Lakewood. Not an unpleasant drive, but longer.

Back when Portland was the Phillies AAA team?

A-Town, it still is a mess, but the people from Wilkes-Barre area go out the back way. I have been to a few of the Rail Riders games for special events. Still get confused when I see SWB in box scores and think it’s the Red Barons.
