Would still be nice to see them throw Didi or even Kingery into a deal for $ reasons though I suppose Kingery might be in the mix next year (and doesn't take up 40-man space).

I assume they need to negotiate a sweetner here. I imagine the Padres want him in the deal more than the Nats though, so if it fell apart then there are many ways to salvage a deal. Hosmer is not much worse than Bell. And his contract is backloaded so he does have trade value (limited of course). I think the Padres wanted to get rid of that AAV more than anything else. He just needs to go to a team where the AAV is less important (i.e. a non luxury tax team). The Nats are unlikely to have luxury tax concerns the next 3 years so were an ideal place to dump the AAV and salary.

Edit - lots of reporting that Hosmer declining the trade would not kill the deal. It is a 10 team no trade clause so they probably can easily move him for little return, picking up as much salary as they need to make the deal happen.

That's why I was thinking an even Moniak for Syndergaard trade might not be total pie-in-the sky. A former 1-1 who at least may now be profiling as an extra outfielder for a two-month rental. They can also spin the "change of scenery" narrative, to his native Southern California, no less.

I bet the Padres just replace Hosmer with Wil Myers. Expiring contract so no future financial benefits, but he has an even higher AAV that would save them more money with the luxury tax this year. He is languishing on the bench now and probably would welcome the trade to rebuild his free agent value for next year.

This seems like the most justifiable use of a no-trade clause ever. Who wants to move across the country, leave San Diego for DC, and leave a playoff team for a non-contender? Question is can they find another taker for him (regardless of how the Soto deal gets finished).

There are some tweets floating around suggesting that Mickey Moniak has been traded. Source says he hasn’t been traded; he is with the Phillies on the taxi squad for the two-game series in Atlanta. En route now.

On another note it seems like the last thing the Phillies would want to do now is move up from the 6th wild card, though obviously you can't finesse that (lest you fall to 7th). But right now we'd be looking at a Padres-Braves first-round series (or Padres-Mets). I suppose that is what San Diego is really chasing (the #4 seed and home field). Then they are well-armed for a SoCal NLDS.

The taxi squad is a bit of a mystery this year. Technically it is still only for COVID. But that does make sense since the combo of tonight's game and tomorrow's day game means it would be almost impossible for any traded player or call-up to arrive.

Eric Hosmer rejected the trade to Washington and will not be part of the Soto deal, per source. Now the Padres have less than five hours to figure out what to do with Hosmer, who is owed $39 million from 2023-25.
