I mean the Braves have gotten better without giving up any prospect. I guess taking on salary (but not a ton). Now they got two corner outfielders which we don’t really need, but still did a good job to improve without giving up anything.

The guy they sent for Pederson was a prospect. #17 in their system if I remember right.

Madrigal was 40th ranked prospect in baseball before the season and had a 114 OPS+ this season in 83 games with the Sox

That would have been like us trading Bohm and Connor Brogdon for Kimbrel. And Madrigal may be a little more valuable than Bohm because of the defense.

Beaz is a rental but I expect the Mets had to give up a top 5 prospect based on the Kimbrel return.

Kimbrel has a $16 million team option next year, so he isn't necessarily a pure rental, given the way he's bounced back this season.

The Yankees have a better chance of being the wild card than the Phillies but a worse chance of winning their division. Winning a wild card is only halfway to making the playoffs, in a way.

Yeah but they can make this hard push for the division knowing they will at least be in the post-season if they only get halfway there (i.e. get four games better but not eight). And they are the Yankees. If the Phillies had a shot at the WC I would have definitely wanted them to be more aggressive/spend more money.

I suspect this deadline is so wild in part because of last year, as well as next year - COVID, the short season, revenue, loss, the upcoming CBA. More teams are ready to pack it in and more teams are ready to go for it, and nobody knows what next year will be.
