I wonder if Watson, or his reps, are making "unreasonable" bonus demands; could explain why he's falling.

Maybe Pittsburgh figured a way to get him to the comp round.

Certainly plenty of teams pushing money down.

As for Painter- I love the delivery, size and current stuff with room to grow. I think in 2 years we will be talking about a guy throwing in the high 90s that we’ll be excited about.

Listening to Watson he was negotiating down the board and the Marlins met his price

Will be interesting to see if the Marlins go off the board here at 31 to pay for Watson.

I guess the Marlins will go cheap after this. Mack is a great pick

Andrew Painter is now slated to join the Phillies. I certainly do not know if this is a good pick or not, but it seems to be a very reasonable pick. Best case, he turns out to be a solid starting pitcher in the majors in a few years, but we all know that there probably is an equal chance that he never really pans out. That said, I would say the same for anybody else that they might have picked.

It's kind of crazy to think that Abel and Painter may never pitch to JT, or be in the same rotation as Nola.

I honestly don’t know if it is a good pick or not, but at the very least it isn’t a “out of LF” pick. It was at least a guy that was being mentioned in that area of the draft. We didn’t take the #100 prospect with the #13 pick.

Most pitchers come back from JT. It's shoulders that I worry about. I think Abel and Painter are both very good picks -- they are the kind of risks you need to take if you want a good pitching staff. Both clearly have the talent to be good MLB pitchers. It's now down mainly to keeping them healthy and also to development. I will take that any day in a first rounder. Too many of our first round position player first rounders have been guys whose success depended upon a lot of development going right, because they had big holes in their game. And, we've learned that our top position prospects can also wash out due to injury. The way the Phillies have drafted recently, I'm not even convinced that a H.S. RHP, although traditionally the riskiest demographic, is actually riskier than the typical Phillies first rounder.

Sorry, read to fast and butchered that. How long will JT catch. Bob Boone caught to a ripe old age.

Should be an interesting 2nd round today. I think the Pirates, Orioles and Royals probably all have overslot deals lined up in front of us (Will Taylor, Bubba Chandler and Anthony Solometo look like good candidates). As always, I just want the Phillies to get decent value where they pick.

Would love to see either college lefty Mikulski or Abbott land with the Phillies. Repeat second round success of Randy Wolf.

It really all boils down to development. Especially with Abel and Painter. They do look like they have the potential to become pitchers at he MLB level. On the negative side with players such as these is that they are a long way away from the show and need an amount of refinement. On the plus side, they have not been exposed to college programs that are focused on winning at any costs in order to maintain their jobs and will abuse players in order to do that.
Hopefully the Phillies now have the instructors in place that can bring along these young arms. There is some evidence this year that that is so as a few of the top notch pitching prospects are showing growth as the year goes on.

I'd rather not take a guy whose likely to have to play 1B, unless we are very confident the DH will be part of the next collective bargaining agreement.
