Baltimore writer lays it all out. The thing is, if they hire him, it's with eyes wide open. Of course it will end badly eventually!

The most interesting stuff to me in here is about how Showalter previously was a big believer in old-school bullpen usage. Defined roles, etc. But there's probably room for compromise there. Plus the new rule will be in effect.

Showalter losing the 2016 wild card game in 11 innings while never getting Britton into the game because a save situation never occurred was pretty brutal.

Not too different than the Dodgers and Kenley Jansen (not getting into the game until it was already lost) last week.

I think the difference is Jansen wasn't necessarily viewed by the Dodgers as their highest leverage reliever at that point. Roberts made several questionable decisions in that game but who knows if they're all his. Whereas if Buck had had a pitching coach using front office analytics in 2016 that surely would not have happened.

One of my takeaways from reading the various reports is that Maddon seemed to hold off on other interviews until things got to a certain point with the Angels.

I kind of figured he'd only do other interviews if they wouldn't meet his number. But he knew he wasn't getting the same $ he got five years ago. Sounds like there are some incentives in the deal too.

Is anyone else actually interviewing Dusty or Buck?

Three years. Reportedly $12-15 million (which I assume means the lower figure is guaranteed but maybe media simply doesn't know the details yet).

Unless I misread, I am pretty sure an earlier post on espn quoted the $25M. Regardless, this kind of sets the bar for where the upper end is. Interesting to see how this plays out with Girardi and Showalter.

Maddon is expected to receive a three-year contract in the $12 million to $15 million range, a source told ESPN.

It's everywhere. Nightengale (who's frequently wrong or just likes to be wrong and first) has said only $12 million.

Dusty worked cheap. Nobody else wants Buck so he's not getting the max either. Girardi probably gets a longer term.

The Showalter hire would be so painfully obvious. Has anything so obvious ever worked? Only thing that comes to mind is Charlie Manuel

It's funny I was going to say that this search reminds me of 2005 when there weren't many candidates and Charlie was the obvious frontrunner (with Leyland the people's choice). But it turns out they interviewed seven or eight guys that time. Not sure if there was even a third finalist?

Anyway, the process isn't really going that much faster. It took them 10 days to fire Kapler (happened last Wednesday, press conference was Friday) and this will probably not be done until Monday.

I think it's good, even if I don't necessarily agree with their process/choice. They (or at least Middleton) know what they want and it's a small group, especially minus Maddon. And they decided they weren't interested in re-interviewing anyone from last time. There were basically only four people who fit the criteria.

My questions are:

1) Can we get Girardi?
2) How much do these Orioles guys really want Buck?

and

3) Did Harper tell Middleton they should interview Dusty and how much weight might that have?

My opinion on this is the Phillies job has to be more attractive than the Mets job...that ownership is not the greatest.

I think this. They may have waited to officially end one managers job until when they had the broad outlines of what it would take to get the next one on board.
