He will likely replace Kyle Garlick on the active roster. Garlick suffered an oblique injury Tuesday night and exited after his first at-bat. He had an MRI Wednesday, as did Jake Arrieta.

Manager Joe Girardi said Wednesday afternoon that no roster moves had been made as the team awaits the results of those two MRIs. He also said outfielder Jay Bruce is still a few days away from returning,

The best part of that story link is the video which shows Romero chugging a can of red bull before coming into get that double play.

I think he is warming to the relief role. He has got a little of that Al Hrabosky Mad Hungarian look about him.

Who knows? He would have been due for a September callup anyway. Most likely he is there to play defense and pinch run for a tired and injured roster anyway. Maybe get a double header start or two. We really had nobody else that it made sense to add, and defense could be a priority especially in situations where Gosselin might be playing the OF.

He can certainly match Garlick or Kingery's performance this season! Marchan's already got a hit and he's never even faced AA pitching. Nothing to lose really (besides games, but we're gonna lose some of those anyway). I doubt he gets a start this week (unless Bruce isn't back Friday) but maybe next week.

I'd like to think it also bodes well for JT and Rhys that they didn't just add one of the new guys instead, but I guess Lucroy is really only for emergency and Bird would only happen if Rhys goes on the 45 or Bruce gets hurt again.

They also can probably take Marchan or Moniak off the active roster next week if they need to for Lucroy or Bird. The 20-day option rule should mean they are not using one of their three option years since they can't option them to the minors for more than 20 days any more.

Lucroy and Bird have such a mediocre recent track record that I am not sure they would be more useful than Marchan and Moniak respectively. There is also a little more flexibility with a 28-man roster where an extra starter can be added for double-headers.

Arrieta and Garlick to the IL, Moniak and Brogdon up.

It's a quirky thing that the Phillies managed to stay healthy through the restart and interruption while so many teams struggled early, but it has all caught up to them now.

Bird is only useful if they want him to play 1B. So long as they have Bruce in a few days (as well as Bohm obviously) they don't really need him. Also no reason Kingery couldn't play there, or Gosselin again. Utley did it a few times.

I said this earlier on the gameday thread but a big problem with this team is that its basically a bunch of losers who don't know how to win. Girardi cannot teach them by himself. Arrieta is the only guy on this roster who ever played in a WS. Harper, for all his talent, played for Washington teams that never won a single postseason series. Ditto for McCutchen in Pittsburgh. Realmuto has never played for a winning ML team in his career. We need a guy in this clubhouse who has played for championship teams, knows what it takes and isn't afraid to get in the faces of his teammates when they lapse from a winning mindset.

I don't know what to do with this bunch. In an ideal world you develop a young core, supplement them with vets, and like in 2007 they break through to the playoffs. If the guys are good enough they learn what it takes to get to the next level, assuming of course the roster was built to actually facilitate that. The Phils as currently constructed didn't get enough from the rebuild and now have to try to cram a square into a round hole to make it work. Without a new management vision to creatively smooth out the roster holes, they have no choice but to try to spend their way out of it, which they are unwilling and to do and seem to be incapable of making the right choices to succeed anyway.
