andyb...unless its the Steve Jeltz of June 8, 1989. Long time Phillie phans might recall that was the night that the Barry Bonds, Bobby Bonilla, Andy Van Slyke led Pirates scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning and Jeltz entered the game early, as Tom Herr was ostensibly given the night off.
Homers by Von Hayes and Jeltz helped the Phils to slowly, almost inexorably climb back till it was Buccos 11-10 entering the bottom of the 8th inning. Jeltz hit his 2nd homer of the game in a 5 run 8th and with ace closer Steve Bedrosian to close it out, the Phils miraculously won 15-11.
That was the game where the Pirates announcer said after the top of the first that if the Bucs lost he would walk from Philadelphia back to Pittsburgh. He indeed made the walk!
By the way, Jayson Stark would probably know this but after this game the Phils next home game, a week later, was against the Mets and the Mets scored 8 runs in the first inning to take an 8-0 lead. I wonder if any team ever started back to back home games down 10-0 and 8-0? Stark would know. Phils once again came back and eventually took an 11-10 lead late and turned the game over to Bedrosian. Unfortunately, he was not up to the task and the Phils lost 15-11...one week after they had won 15-11.
Led by the aforementioned weak hitting Steve Jeltz.
