Once Harper opted to not take 34 I think that took the number out of circulation for the foreseeable future, and yet, I'm not sure it needs to be retired either. There's no doubt they will consider the (informal, but still unviolated) HoF rule eventually. Athletic did a big story on that earlier this year.
