Just looking at the pitching match-ups for the Braves series.

Looks like Max Fried v Aaron Nola
TBD v TBD
Folty v Arrieta

Their TBD is because Gausman is on the 10 day. Ours is because Eickhoff loves giving up home runs.
We have a day off however so no reason we couldn't push everyone up a day so that it lines up more like this
Fried v Nola
TBD v Arrieta
Folty v Eflin

That makes me feel much more comfortable.

It's an interesting point, not so much because of TBD as because Eflin gets to go. Doesn't seem like the Phillies have been quick to do this though.

I think the experience of the entire rotation wearing down at the end in 2018 means they want to roll with a 5-man rotation and grab the 5th day of rest a bunch of times in the season where they can. This probably means 32-33 starts for Nola, but that might be wise compared to pushing him to 35 like the Nats will do with Scherzer or Strasburg. It is a realization of cumulative workload with their most important pitching assets.

They do this less in the bullpen unfortunately where their usage seems planned on a daily basis without looking as much as total workload.

Thats what I was getting at. I don't love the idea of a Cole Irvin/Eickhoff bullpen day or another opener game. We would need a solution for game 2 vs the Nationals next week though so its not like we avoid the problem entirely but a win over the Braves is more valuable than a win over any other team right now. We could go with a bullpen/opener game in either the first or second game vs Washington with Pivetta for either other game depending on how they felt about the match up.

Pushing Arrieta and Eflin up a day would mean something like this
Nola v Braves
Arrieta v Braves
Eflin v Braves
Pivetta/TBD v Nationals
TBD/Pivetta v Nationals

As fastidious as they seem to be (and I know you've probably read this) it's hard to believe they wouldn't have that in mind, especially after last year, and with October a real goal. Seems like they abandon the script in-game (or when the pen is especially thin) as needed though. If they're not already thinking about August and September they certainly need to be soon. Maybe it waits until after the deadline at which point they know what they have and who is truly fungible.

Pitching Arrieta Saturday would mean only 3 days rest (Wed, Thurs, Fri) plus hes not really pitching that well. 4.31 ERA after last night, Also would mean only 3 days rest for Eflin on Sunday. I dont think we want to risk that either.

I think El P just has the days and rotation a little confused (or the sportswire probable pitchers did). Arrieta would pitch Sunday on four days rest (Pivetta pitches Friday and Nola pitches Saturday, both on five days rest). But yes, given his performance (and age) a spot start or bullpen game would still be best I think. Which is to say, you're trying to beat the Braves and Arrieta isn't necessarily the best option (and Eflin's not available).

I think the bullpen game is probably the way to go (do the opener and also bring back Irvin, whose 10 days will be up by then. Both VV and Eickhoff himself could be in the middle inning mix).

Davis down and Ramos up today. If Morgan could be back Friday that would be really helpful.

Looking at the way Hamels has pitched this year. I really wish we made a deal for him at the deadline last year. Can’t remember what the Cubs gave up, but I don’t think it was much. I’m sure we could have beaten it and gotten some of his contract covered.

Yup, but who saw it coming? The difference is they had World Series aspirations and we were not aggressively trying to win the division. Maybe we'll sign him short/cheap for next year (depending who we get this year).

Murphy eventually gets to the heart of the matter/states the obvious:

Aaron Nola and Arrieta have not pitched like a No. 1 and a No. 2. If that were the case, the Phillies could get by with Zach Eflin and a resurgent Nick Pivetta at No. 3 and No. 4, and then live with whatever every fifth day offers. As it stands now, they are just 4-23 in games in which they score fewer than four runs.

Also heard Kapler say Ramos was activated off the IL today, though I don’t see the transaction. It was also interesting that he said he had the best ERA in the pen last year, so he expected him to pitch in high leverage situations.

No Morgan on the way quite yet but maybe Neshek

• Right-hander Pat Neshek (strained right shoulder) will throw a bullpen Thursday. He could be activated Saturday or Sunday in Atlanta.

• Outfielder Roman Quinn (strained right groin) played another rehab game Wednesday. He could rejoin the team in the coming days.

• Left-hander Adam Morgan is scheduled to throw bullpen sessions Thursday and Sunday. If it goes well, he would begin a rehab assignment as early as Tuesday. He could be activated between June 20-22.

That's i right there. 2019 Nola reminds me of 2009 Hamels. Arrieta is a mediocre veteran on the back 9 of his career, and pitching like that. Everyone else is mid-to-back end of the rotation quality. Right now, the Phillies have no ace on the staff.
